In autumn 1972, I think it was, I heard Phil Keaggy sing Song in the Air in an empty storefront in Wolcottville, Indiana.
It was truly a sweet performance, for the full set of maybe two dozen people in attendance. In my memory, at least, it was superior to the version that made it to vinyl with Glass Harp.
I haven't found a Keaggy redo, online, that resembles what I recall. But it occurs to me that possibly someone has produced (or will produce) a cover of that song, yielding something more like what I heard that night.
If it has yet to be done, I would offer a few suggestions, toward recreating the version he sang for us. First, make it less mechanical, less metronomic, more felt from the heart. I'm not saying boy-band saccharine; just a little more thoughtful.
That said, it really is a song for a tenor if not a soprano. As its lyrics suggest, it should fly. In secular terms comprehensible to someone my age, it would be Garfunkel, not Simon.
If anyone knows of a version of that nature, I'd really appreciate links.
