  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Here's a strange question... (don't ask me why or how I came up w/ it.)

Many animals and bugs and critters and what have you secrete chemicals that affect the way other animals and bugs and critters and what have you interact with them. Some of these chemicals actually tend to increase the sexual attraction the other members of the same species and opposite sex has for him/her/it. So....

Suppose a cosmetic company found a chemical that served such a purpose in us people and would cause a noticeable increase in interest from the opposite sex. And suppose they sold this wonderful elixir at a reasonable price. Would you buy it? Oh, and why or why not?

Actually, humans do this too. Studies have shown that things like the smell after a somewhat fresh workout(not BO, but that "I just ran a mile" type smell) and whatnot gives off a smell that attracts the opposite sex.
Yes yes, this is true, but not to the extent that the difference is "noticeable." Hence I included in my question the term "noticeable."

And if we wanna get super-fun science factoid crazy, the phenomenon where unrelated women who live together frequently synchronize their periods is based on emitted body chemicals as well.

You may have yourself some pretty potent pheromones though.

It's been pretty noticeable in my experience.

Companies already claim to sell such products, I thought.

Eeew, but I suppose you got a point there.

I've got a cologne called Sex Panther by Odeon
Man, Sex Panther cologne? Doesn't sound very Sierra Club friendly, but with a name like that I think I'd have to buy it anyway.

A lady: "What is that cologne you're wearing?"

Me: <In a smarmy voice> "It's Sex Panther, baby."

I don't know... maybe the "sex panther" cologne only works around female panthers and other large cats...

But if there were a cologne that did that, I probably won't buy it. What would be the need? I kind of like the friendship first idea, and how would I know if the women who are suddenly coming onto me are not just turned on by the smell of the perfume? And that could cause problems of its own. Try being a one woman man while wearing a cologne like that! It would be rather entertaining to watch, but probably rather frustrating for the people involved... that is, once the "yeah, I'm sexy!" feeling kinda wears off.

I don't know if I would buy female pheromone perfume because then I would be attracting the wrong type of attention, the men would only like me because they are reacting to the smell!

Even though I do wear perfume I don't want it to attract the wrong type of attention either.
If a person is mainly attracted to a person because of "looks" or a "certain smell" to me it shows their shallowness.

The book of Proverbs has a lot of awesome advice on what a person should be attracted to in a future mate.

No way would I use that. I don't even use deodourant unless I'm going to a formal occasion. Showering and brushing your teeth daily is usually enough for most people.

One time I went to a 3 day music festival, and by the end of it the girls in my youth group were telling me I smelt nice. I hadn't showered in 3 days, and I'd been sleeping in my clothes... wierd.

I think that's a cultural thing. Around here, people (other than little kids) use deodorant daily at minimum, regardless of what they're doing that day. Failing to use deodorant of some kind is considered poor personal hygiene. But when we get exchange students from other countries, a lot of them don't use it at all, as showering is considered enough in their countries and they consider the smell of human bodies to be a positive thing. Which I guess is kind of the whole pheremone thing...
