  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So before 42 AD, the Christians in Rome did not need a bishop for 9 years.

So really Peter never founded and built the Church at Rome.

Paul was the first Apostle to visit Rome. But even he didnt start the church i think. I think the origin of the Church at Rome came from the vistors from Rome on the day of Pentecost going back to Rome and telling people about Jesus (Acts 2:10). This just what i think from reading the Bible.

I dont know but is this what you believe?

Yup (except that it was probably shorter than 9 years). But we do know that in Paul's letter he does not specifically greet the bishop.

Yup. The church at Rome existed before Peter's visit.

We don't know that.

Makes sense to me.

If you take a look at Romans 16, it seems that Paul personally knows a lot of the Christians at Rome. You can also see that he sends Phebe (Gasp! a woman!) to them. He also notes that Priscilla and Aquila, his friends from way back are in Rome.

Hi my friend,

Many of the early Christians refer to the church in Rome as "founded by Peter and Paul." So if Paul got there earlier, it might not have been that much earlier. Or Peter could have already been there, and Paul did not want to mention it, because Peter was a target? Just a thought. (If Peter used the codeword Babylon for Rome in his epistles, I doubt that Paul would give his location away in another epistle).

You have some good questions, and we have some good historians in OBOB who don't venture to GT often but would probably be able to answer your questions if no one else can here. You are welcome to come in and ask questions there: http://www.christianforums.com/f26

Yeah we dont know for certain. But if you read Romans its certainly the impression you will get.

Why does Paul never mention the work Peter was doing if he was there, but he never once mentions Peter being with him in Rome in any of his letters.

Pauls final letter which he sent while in Rome, Philemon 1: 24Also my coworkers Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, and Luke.
If Peter was in Rome had he deserted Paul and the rest of the Christians there? Because doesnt get a mention as a co-worker of Paul.
Colossians 4:14 Luke, good friend and physician, and Demas both send greetings.
Why does Peter never send his greetings?

Paul is supposed to have written the letters he sent from Rome between 60-62 AD, and bishop of Rome doesnt get one mention.
Also Paul writes a letter to Rome i think in 56 AD and never mentions the bishop of Rome. Correct me if im wrong on that.

Im sorry but i think that Peter went to Rome at a much later date.

Not sure if you read my post above, but if Peter had to use codewords for his location, (Babylon for Rome), then would it make sense for Paul to openly give away his location in Rome??
Peter was always the head of the apostles, Jesus gave him the keys to the kingdom, and if the persecutors of the Church were gunning for anyone, it was Peter. This is a theory of mine I don't know if there is any way to know this for certain. But it makes sense to me.

Yeah maybe you are right.
