Peter in Rome?

Ok......it doesnt say Pete went to Rome in the Bible so just wondering how we know he went to Rome.

Also was he really Bishop of Rome?

Because the Fathers of the Early Church explicitly mention it. It was common knowledge among the Early Christians.

Also, when Peter writes from "Babylon," that means Rome. It was commonly understood that the codeword for the most evil place (pagan Rome) was Babylon. Considering that the earliest Christian theologians and historians agree that Peter went to Rome, and never to actual Babylon, it makes perfect sense.

I think he was in Babylon......not Rome.

Maybe he went there to Rome some time latter.....but from that verse i think he was in Babylon.

Here is some testimony of the Early Church:


In his Letter to the Romans (A.D. 110), Ignatius of Antioch wrote that he could not command the Roman Christians the way Peter and Paul once did, such a comment making sense only if Peter had been a leader, if not the leader, of the church in Rome.

Irenaeus, in Against Heresies (A.D. 190), said that Matthew wrote his Gospel “while Peter and Paul were evangelizing in Rome and laying the foundation of the Church.”


Tertullian, in The Demurrer Against the Heretics (A.D. 200), noted of Rome, “How happy is that church . . . where Peter endured a passion like that of the Lord, where Paul was crowned in a death like John’s [referring to John the Baptist, both he and Paul being beheaded].”

In the same book, Tertullian wrote that “this is the way in which the apostolic churches transmit their lists: like the church of the Smyrnaeans, which records that Polycarp was placed there by John; like the church of the Romans, where Clement was ordained by Peter.”


As for the Babylon thing - do you think the name Babylon in Revelation actually means the real Babylon? At that time it was not important city, but from the OT, Babylon has symbolic meaning as a place of sin and godlessness.

Revelation is a much different book than the letters of Peter.

But Babylon was still a defunct city, and no one in Early Christian history ever said that Peter founded a church in Babylon, they ALL say that he and Paul were in Rome. (I included 3 quotes, there are plenty more).

Ok so let me understand this, you believe:

Later Peter goes to Rome and becomes Bishop of Rome

Yes, and I would add that both Peter and Paul were martyred in Rome. Peter was crucified upside down (he did not feel worthy to be crucified right side up in the manner of Our Lord) and Paul was beheaded.

Until he was martyred. His successor was Linus. Followed by Anacletus, followed by Clement. (Clement is the famous Early Christian "Clement of Rome." and wrote a great letter to the church at Corinth.)

From what I have read, I think the most reliable date of Peter's arrival to Rome is 42 A.D., and he was martyred in 67 or 68 A.D., during Nero's persecutions. Linus became Bishop of Rome immediately after Peter died, because Peter had appointed him as his successor (as any good leader would do when they are in constant danger of death).

Peter was first the Bishop of Antioch, when he came to Rome I think he automatically became it's bishop. The first bishops were from the 12 apostles, and as the Church grew, more bishops were ordained by the apostles.

Why did the christians in Rome not need a Bishop of Rome before Peter came?

Perhaps the community was too small? A bishop (sometimes translated as overseer in modern translations, from the word episkopos) oversaw many churches within his region. But to be honest with you I am not sure of the answer, I must say it is a really good question! Perhaps someone else can help.

There are many early writtings that say Peter went to Rome. I am sure they will get posted here. We do know he was killed in Rome as where many others.
