From what I have seen the cats at Petsmart are well looked after
If someone takes a single animal and horribly abuses it until it's battered, helpless body gives out and dies in defeat, I highly doubt you'd approve of their ability as a pet owner. The question is, would your opinion change should that same person have another pet they treat like royalty?
I believe most would agree that if PetSmart employees treat the cats well, it doesn't negate all of the animals they treat with disgusting neglect. For every cat on PetSmart grounds, there are thousands of animals with even more intelligence - such as parrots - who are sitting alone, sitting battered, neglected, starved, choked with disease, murdered with the excuse of "imperfection," or lying forgotten in mass graves and mulch.
I honestly haven't come across a PetSmart who keeps felines on their grounds. Quite frankly, I don't care. The obligation to keep cats with the appearance of proper care is much higher than other animals because the general public knows what to look for in a healthy cat. Not to mention, your average untrained citizen (a.k.a., PetSmart employee) also knows proper steps to take in caring for a hearty, common pet such as a housecat. This is not so with birds and small animals, who are WILD. They are NOT domesticated.
PetSmart & PetCo
don't care about the animals, plain and simple. When you care, you don't support those who abuse animals; you don't hire uneducated emloyees; you don't lie about pet products to make sales; you don't sell rabbits for a ridiculous holiday tradition; you don't sell rodents in 3"x6" habitats; you don't sell any living thing without vet & police records; you don't put a living creature "on sale;" you don't sell parrots without toys & proper diets; you don't sell parrots to children; you don't sell parrots to someone you haven't worked closely with for at least a year; you don't sell Cockatoos to someone who hasn't previously owned a large parrot; you don't sell large parrots to someone who doesn't desire constant noise and massive, gaping wounds; you don't sell parrots to someone who hasn't been thoroughly informed of the time parrots need and the messes they make;
you don't trick the public into thinking it's okay to rip a parrot from the nest as a baby and convince them this act will create a better pet when it will actually result in a terrible, ill pet; you don't allow animals to just die of untreated wounds; you don't allow animals to slaughter each other; you don't break an animals neck because they suffer from a disease; you don't accept animals sent in mere cardboard boxes across massive distances; you don't support places that send you the majority of your animals trampled, diseased, and dead... should I go on?
What I've described are the LEAST offensive things PetSmart and PetCo do to animals. Are any of these acts covered because a few cats are well kept?
These folks can be defeated, and exotic animals can once again have their protection if we all take a stand against those who torture animals that can't even stand up for themselves.
