  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

My dead pets were always buried in our yard somewhere. It seems rather odd that people would spend all that money to bury a pet, when the only reason to bury the pet is to memorialize it. That would be accomplished better on one's own estate under a favorite tree and beneath a flower bed.

It's actually illegal in some areas to bury pets in the backyard... (not that people don't do it anyway....)

My own are buried in my yard...I'd have no interest in having them buried in the manor described. However, I have some problems with the idea that these people paid for a service (regardless of what we may think of it) and are now being told the deal is off.... :sigh:

When I worked at a veterinary hospital we had to inform people that we would allow them to take their deceased pets home with them, but the onus was on them to preform body disposal according to the county regulations.

Basically we pointedly turned a blind eye to burying Fluffy in your back yard.

In my experience, a lot of people really do think of their pets as their children of a different sort (I do a bit too) and it is important that their death be treated respectfully. I had to dumpsterize two pet rats and still feel terrible about it, but I had no yard to bury them in. We had some really extensive cremation services available as well, up to and including horses. The most popular service was a fairly inexpensive mass cremation once a week, followed by a little service that the owners could attend, and the spreading of the ashes over a really pretty field.

Anyone know why it's illegal? And anyone know what the big deal is about burying animals and humans together. Not that the stiffs care.

I believe it has to do with assorted contaminations of soil and water...

I don't think there's any big deal about burying humans and animals together.. I personally just found it odd that the article didn't mention people worrying about the human remains in that particular cemetery.

Well, when my parents' Yorkie dies, I hate to see what they will do with it. That thing is treated better than a child is. They'd probably lie and say it was a person and have a closed casket funeral so no one would know.

And I think that's the norm.

I agree that many people consider pets as part of the family, and like you feel somewhat the same.

And as long as nobody tells me I HAVE to bury my pets in an overpriced pet cemetery I see nothing wrong with folks choosing to make use of them and being upset when the service they paid for is not maintained. I personally do know someone who moved their pets remains from their backyard when they moved.. in our family we have a slightly comedic, slightly true fear of mom selling the house and someone discovering the pet cemetery in the backyard.

Some years ago we buried an unknown cat back there (our tomb of the unknown cat) the poor thing got shut in the unused garage one winter and discovered in spring :( my mom wrapped it up in one of our old receiving blankets.. can you imagine what someone might think should they dig up the box of bones wrapped in a baby blanket?

I've thought about having our birds freeze-dried when the time comes. No joke, it's a real technique for preserving animals. When done properly, they're almost perfectly lifelike.

No offense but thats mildly creepy. Putting the dead on display like a trophy...very strange.

I personally wouldnt want to do this for my pets, I take them into the mountains around my house and let the coyotes have them (When they die), but I understand why people would.

Pets are very important to some people, especially people who lived alone with no one but thier pets for company. Theres a special bond between people and pets because pets love unconditionally and arent as emotionally unstable as people.

We flushed our fish down the toilet, buried our dogs, hamsters, turtles, and birds. As kids, it was great fun to give a pet a funeral. All the kids will gather, have a very solemn service, we would dig a hole and even make a stick cross for the beloved animal. The resting place for all those pets was an empty lot that also doubled as our field of war....so many of the stick crosses were converted into guns w/in a week or so :)
