that sounds very immature here, one of the purpose of the forum is t ask question that you could not ask you pastor about. pastor for fear of social reprecussion. I could never ask my pastor some of the questions I see here.IP addresses aren't like a fingerprint.
One surefire way of making sure you don't get in trouble with your church is to be honest with your pastor and don't say anything on here you wouldn't say to your pastor. No?

I express my views openly in church and anywhere else because I have strong textual support for what I believe. This just shows me that deep down, those who ARE bashing the SDA doctrines feel guilty about it at some level.

same here... and just because a few suggest that asking questions is church bashing doesn't make it true...And they are being honest in their opinions. The Mods only have access to the information provided upon registration. I think under the old CF the Mod application asked for more detailed information. Then he must have provided his personal information when he applied to be a moderator. I know from personal experience that Adventist who disagree with you can be real barracudas and will not hesitate to write letters to conference officials and the men who lead these organizations don't always warrant the title.he is concerned and rightly so that someone might go to the conference office. This is a legitimate concern. Tall needs to work through these things with out people "head hunting"

In my opinion, any Mod who does such a thing has done something not only unethical, but also illegal. If they do do such a thing, they should be sued.

Hmm. The only personal info I can think of would be IP's. LongHair, you guys can see IPs, right? (I haven't seen a message board that doesn't allow the mods to see IP's before, myself).
If this is the case, it would depend on the person's knowledge of computers. If very internet "Savvy", one can take an IP and trace it to the source, or even address..name..phone number. It all depends. My mom and I once had a legal tracker due to the fact she had an internet stalker which liked to come into her forums under different names and such.
This could be the sensitive info, but it really depends on what Tall meant origionally. And still, it takes some skill to get good info out of an IP. Most trackers only provide time zone or possibly city/state/province.And that wouldn't be site specific..all you have to do is email a person and they have your IP.
P.S - In the case of cable internet the ip is less specific, because you are lanning with several machines. Some IP's also change every time you log on. So it's not always a very good way to get personal info, either.

The security of this format of the forum (UBB) is a joke. It doesn't take much to hack into. It is a constant cat and mouse game between the hackers and the developers.

Seriously, I will never understand why those people who despise questioning of Adventism so much just don't go somewhere else where it is more apologist orientated. CF is NOT an SDA apologist site and never will be.
I mean, for real. Revival Sermons forums, for example, would be an ideal fit for them. No questioning allowed, only the ultra-conservative party line tolerated, EGW veneration encouraged. All liberals and progressives have been driven out and only the 'elite' chosen remnant few remain.
That would be about five regular posters last time I checked.
It sounds like Heaven for them, so why don't they just go join the party? They could talk about Jesuits and NLP all they wanted. I am sure Richard would love to have them. I say this in all seriousness.

The possibility of confidential communications or personal ID's getting in the wrong hands IS a very serious matter. I would never make light of that.
But I did find it very amusing that those who do come right out and deny the fundemental teachings of the SDA church while professing membership in such, would be afraid of the GC finding out about their posts.

I did raise the issue with you in previous conversations, however it does not currently have a direct bearing on my situation because I have talked to my conference ministerial director and we are already planning a meeting to go over my concerns with the officers of the conference. So at this point telling the conference wouldn't do much.
However, the issue does have a bearing on some others, beyond just employment issues. While Longhair may not have come across confidential information while on staff I assure you there is a great deal there, both in the archived reports and CR and when interacting in ministry with posters.
I am not referring just to Adventists either. When on staff you will now have access to a number of archives that span all the forums.
There are issues that have come up regarding people's sexual preference, marital status, "orthodoxy." etc. Some of these should never have been discussed but were. Some were admissions in reports or someone else who knew them stating it.
In other cases, and perhaps more as I was on the pastoral team for a time, but even before, people would share things in confidence ,such as struggles with pornography, demonic oppression, sexual orientation etc., and theese things have no business being relayed to anyone.
Moreover, we have had incidents in the past with an Adventists poster who was given confidential info from a mod, under the agreement of confidentiality, and that was not kept.
Therefore it is very much an issue.
And yes, from an IP you can often trace someone's home town fairly easily, and depending on the situation, trace it to an individual with the help of law enforcement. I have done this once in the case of a suidical poster so that they could get help, but even then it is controversial to in any way use someone's private info.
