Hey everyone,
I was a little surprised this had not been shared already, but thought I would go ahead and make a thread about it. For anyone who has been following the state of Christianity in China over the last couple of years, the government has grown less apathetic and increasingly hostile toward the Christian church there once again. This past week, roughly 100 members of Early Rain Church in Chengdu were arrested, and while many have been released, the majority of the elders of the church, including its head pastor, Wang Yi, are still in custody. He has not been heard from since Monday. From what I understand, the police showed up at the homes of many of the members and told them to sign a document stating that Early Rain Church is a cult and renouncing their affiliation with it. Those who refused to sign were then arrested. From my understanding, there have been reports of physical abuse of some of the detainees, and some are being sent to "re-education camps." There is a seminary and a Christian elementary school associated with the church as well, and some of the detainees are seminary students. I also read a report that a child who showed up to class at the Christian school was taken into custody as well.

This story has gained some international attention. The New York Times published this article yesterday:
Pastor Charged with 'Inciting Subversion' as China Cracks Down on Churches

It has also gained some popularity because Pastor Wang Yi wrote a letter than he intended to be released if he was ever detained, and it has made its rounds on social media now, having been shared by well-known pastors like John Piper and Tim Keller. You can read his letter here:
My Declaration of Faithful Disobedience

This particular story is a little closer to home for my church because my pastor has traveled to Chengdu a few times to teach at the seminary there. He has personally met and interacted with some of those who have been detained.

If you could, please pray that all who are detained would be released unharmed, and that the Gospel would spread like wildfire throughout China even as its government attempts to snuff it out. Thank you!

Thank you Jesus, for your grace and mercy, for the committed Christians you have raised up in China to preach your word at this difficult time. We ask for your encouragement of Wang Yi and the members of the church he pastors. We ask for their courage to maintain a strong Christian testimony and continue to be a light unto the world.

Heavenly Father, please pay your attention to care believers in China, especially in this very difficult time. May you give them wisdom to only worship God and deal with the affairs that force them to worship their political leaders. May you give them wisdom to distinguish the sufferings between for the Lord and for political reason. May you touch hearts of some officials, make them know persecution is wrong and adjust religious policy. May you rebuild the relationship between politics and religion there. May you give them a peaceful and joyful future, especially in great sufferings become a glory testimony to the world. May you bless them in the international relationship. May the nuclear weapons be in your control and bring the eternal peace to China Mainland and Taiwan. Amen.

I would say something to you:
How great it is in enjoying love of brotherhood in Jesus Christ. Cage can not prevent sunshine into heart , making heart warm. 1Tim2:1-3 I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone--for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior. May Believers including I be not accused in the presence of God and earthly judgers.
Many blessings to you.

I shared in one of my above posts that there is a Facebook group called 'Pray for Early Rain Covenant Church.' You can go there and see firsthand reports of what is happening in Chengdu. What is happening there is not common in other parts of China, that is true, but what I have shared in this thread is accurate information. The pastor of the church and his wife still have not been released from custody, and members of the church continue to face varying types of persecution. There have been reports of one man losing his job because he refused to stop attending this church, and another person being kicked out of his apartment because his landlord was told by a government official that he is part of an evil cult. I would not share these things if I did not believe they are 100% accurate and true. With that said, I would ask everyone to continue praying for this church. (Staff Edit)
