Work? Indeed.Sounds like work to me. Attaining sounds we have to work very hard in order to get it. How can you work hard in order not to do something?
While initial salvation (getting in) is "without works," the ongoing walk of the believer mandates a lot of work.
But the important thing to keep in mind is this: Our Lord does all the heavy lifting. By the indwelt Holy Spirit, HE gives us the strength (dunamis) to do what we are too weak to do. As we continue, we get experientially more and more like how we are declared by the blood of Jesus: Righteous. That is sanctification, when our actual physical walk starts to show forth true godliness.
As John Wesley said: God has His part and we have out part. God will not do our part and we CANNOT do God's part.
