People who use disabled toilets... Scum?

So I was using a disabled toilet the other day. The other toilets were locked. As I was leaving to flush, I accidentally pulled the red emergency cord, so I thought I better make a quick a get away before the paramedics arrive. Outside though was an angry looking old man who said "you don't look very disabled". I was suitably embarrassed and quick as a flash I said "I'm deaf, what is your excuse?". He said "I'm old". I shook my head in disgust and walked off.

You have to think to yourself, is it all really worth it, I'm not so sure now. On the other hand though being disabled doesn't mean that you're not capable of queuing just like everyone else. So what do you think of using disabled toilets?

It's a toilet. Sometimes you just don't care. You just have to go.

But I'm confused. So you use it and then judged someone else for using it, lied on top of it and left the cord pulled without taking responsibility? And you got "should I use disabled toilets when I'm not disabled" out of that? (If you're really deaf then you can cut out the lying part). I think there are some other things going on here Stan. :)

He judged me first though! Yes I shouldn't have lied, I was a bit tipsy though.

Sometimes, even if the other toilets are available, I will use the disabled one. They are roomier, usually cleaner also. If no one else is waiting to use it, I don't see a problem with it. As far as I'm concerned, they are made accessible for people with disabilities, but are not ONLY for people who are handicapped.

Nothing "wrong" about being tipsy.

The wrongs was commenting on just because he was judged doesn't mean he should judge.

And no, not really. It isn't particularly smart to drink so much that you lose ANY ability to recognize the world around you though.

Wait, wait, people are concerned about using disabled toilets? I know it seems a bit rude of me, but I rarely see anyone disables ever using them, and occasionally I'll go in there even if the other ones are only slightly dirty compared to it. I don't see why it's much of a concern, though I'd imagine the embarrassment if someone truly needed to use it as you were doing your business in there. I don't actually think about it; call me the bad guy.

Agreed, and same here.

I think the morality issue comes in when there is a line in which a person in a wheelchair is waiting along with several others, and the first bathroom to open up is the handicapped stall. Now, even though you're next in line, you can just as easily go to another stall when it opens up, whereas the person in the wheelchair cannot. So the right thing to do would be to let them take that stall, and wait for another one.

That said, if it's the only available one and/or there are no handicapped people waiting for a stall, of course you can use it. It's a stall; it's meant to be used! It's roomier and easier for all of us to maneuver in.

I was a little confused about your terminology. When you say "disabled toilet" I keep thinking you mean the toilet is broken, in which I'd have to say "yeah, the toilet's probably scum...my." But you mean to say a toilet for disabled people? Someone who's old can use any toilet stall, unless they have a wheelchair or need a lot of space. Being deaf would be the same. But since you mentioned a red cord, I'm thinking maybe it's a special stall where medical emergencies might take place. I don't think I've seen one of those.

And by the way, how did you not get caught in your lie? If you're deaf, how could you have heard what he had said and replied? (Even if you can read lips, your words wouldn't come out sounding normal if you hadn't been able to hear in years.) How did he not catch that?

I edited this out of the original post, but the truth is I put on a deaf persons voice. Yes, yes, I know, I'm going to hell!

When you need to go, you need to go!

Probably lying wasn't the best thing to have done but you were tipsy--I would have gone with the "hey, the other's are locked and no one else was here, settle down!" line.

Btw your avatar is amazing :D

I think when nobody disabled is in the restroom then I use whatever stall is available. The disabled restroom is really meant for people who have mobility issues. The reason they can't queu up like everyone else is that it takes much longer to get yourself set up to use the toilet. I spent several months in a wheelchair after an assault, I did not have much feeling in my legs, getting into the stall, getting myself out of clothes to use the toilet and getting situated on the toilet easily took me three times as long if not longer.. the last minute rush to the toilet is just not an option when you can't move about freely especially if you are in a wheelchair.

So no you aren't scum for using a disabled toilet, but you might be a bit narrow minded about the need for accomodations for people with disabilities if you can't imagine why they can't just wait on line all the time.

i only see a problem if there is a disabled person who needs to use it. if theres only one stall and i need to use it well, then its really every man for themselves, the stores to blame for that not people who use it

i use the stall because its more private

Judgmental is when you assume someone is something based on limited information. I'm just pointing out the obvious. :) Like, it's not judgmental to call someone gay. It's judgmental to call them perverted BECAUSE they are gay.

Yes, I'm perfectly aware of what judgemental means. So what was your justification for implying that I, I quote "drink so much that you lose ANY ability to recognize the world around you though" when all I said was that I was tipsy?
