  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Everything David Bazan touches turns to gold. Or something like that.

I love Pedro the Lion. Based on his songs, his Q&A at his live shows, and the few times I've had a chance to chat with him, he is a very thoughtful man and is one of the rare christians that knows what it means to be a Christian and an artist. His stories don't all have happy endings, his songs are sometimes sardonic, other times just fun, and other times depressing. Just like life. He has the ability to capture in his little vignettes everything --the good and the bad aspects -- about life.

I also think it's funny that some of the strongest and most creative christians are the ones that most of christendom ignore and/or are offended by (e.g. David Bazan, David Eugene Edwards, Sufjan Stevens, Half-Handed Cloud, All Things Bright and Beautiful, et cetera) It just seems sort of weird.

Anyway, great thread. It's encouraging to know there are some other appreciators out there.

All Things Bright and Beautiful = Awesome

Anyone have a suggestion on where to start (what cd) if you are new to Pedro?

I would start with It's Hard To Find A Friend or The Only Reason I Feel Secure. Those two albums have songs that are catchy, well performed, but also are challenging and thought-provoking. They are a little more laid back though, so if you would rather have something a little more intense, Control is pretty good. Control is a concept album that tells the story of a man who cheats on his wife and then she murders him. It is pretty heavy thematically and it's conclusion is somewhat ambiguous, but there are some great songs on there.

I started with Control, but my favorite album is It's Hard To Find A Friend. I think regardless of where you start you'll be pretty happy. A bad Pedro song is better than most other artists good songs.

I like the Whole EP alot, but I think I can relate to a lot of songs on It's Hard to Find A Friend more. Granted I can relate to songs on Whole too (e.g. Lullaby is fantastic), but I just always seem to go back to IHTFAF.

I like Winners Never Quit too. And Achilles Heel has grown on me too. Again, a bad Pedro songs is better than most other bands good songs.

Yup. Ran across the streaming audio at Pure Volume a month or so ago. Good stuff. Not as good as Pedro, but still good. I'll probably get it when it comes out.
