  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Good morning all,

Christ is risen!

I'm Alex - a confessional Lutheran of the Missouri Synod. I'm a college student, finishing up my second year at George Mason University majoring in mathematics with a minor in religious studies (early church history is my focus!), and after I graduate I plan to go to Concordia Theological Seminary in Ft Wayne, IN.

I grew up in the Lutheran Church, and have recently found an obsession and love for the ascetic practices of the early church, still continued in Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic monasticism. I believe monasticism has a place in Lutheranism, although it has not been a significant part of our tradition, so I hope to restore/create a type of monastic/ascetic tradition available to Lutherans (hence the username).

I've got a blog that I recently started to chronicle this journey into an ascetic style of life, and I'd be honored if you check it out when you get a chance. There's not much just yet, but I'm just now beginning. Prayers as I begin this journey are welcomed, as well as any advice that any of you may have (I'm looking at you in particular, my Orthodox and Roman brethren!). Right now I struggle to follow the most basic fasting rules, but by the grace of God, I pray that I can subdue my flesh in order to serve my neighbor better.

The Lutheran Monk

Anyhow. That's a brief introduction about me! If you've got questions, let me know! I look forward to getting to know you all on CF in the future and learning from those who are far more clever than I am. Thanks be to God!

Alex

There are both Benedictine and Franciscan Lutheran monastics and tertiaries in the US, though our religious tradition is not known for monasticism (quite the opposite, really!).

I know of St. Augustine's House in Michigan (a Benedictine monastery), but I was unfamiliar about the Franciscans. Do you have more information about them?

And that's part of why I'm doing this. I think Lutheranism and monasticism could work quite well together, so hopefully I can work against some stereotypes!

The Franciscans are associated with the ELCA.

At least one group was founded in Orlando (where I currently live): The Lutheran Third Order of St

Benedictine spirituality is probably a more natural fit for Lutherans in general. Ora et labora. Franciscans are a bit more radical in their implications.

Thanks for the Franciscan link. I'm LCMS, but I'll check it out and see what they have to say. I was just talking with a pal of mine the other day about monasticism, and he said the same as you -- that the Benedictine Rule fits much better with Lutheranism than most other rules. I suppose ora et labora plays a big role with that, given our understanding and emphasis of vocation, but I wonder why else there is that appeal to Benedictine spirituality in particular within Lutheranism...

I'm basing my ascetic life/religious order heavily on Pachomius and Patrick, but simply because of the massive influence that Benedict had on the Western church, I can already see that what I'm striving for is going to result in something quite similar to his Rule.
