Read an interesting article on CNET asking if PC gaming is dead.
Personally..I don't think it's anywhere near dead. Though Microsoft and Sony deffinetly are growing in players rapidly.
Right now...PC gaming for ONLINE play only has a big advantage in that when you buy an online game...you are getting a multitude of quality games with it in the form of total conversion mods. Plus being able to mod your server...make new ways to prevent cheating (PC gaming is the safest way to play at the moment without cheaters) and made custom server rules.
But I think if there ever comes a time where console games can be modded...by creating a connection between an Xbox and a PC..where you can download tools for a specific game...create the mod on the PC and then upload it to your Xbox...THEN we are going to see console gaming by FAR exceed PC gaming.
But so far..it's the freedom of PC gaming that keeps it so popular. I would LOVE to see moddable console games. But for this moment in time...buying something like Call of Duty 2 for the PC is giving you a whole lot more for your money than buying it for a console where you play it once or twice and that's ALL you can do with it...(unless you count the shallow online play)
Just imagine being able to buy a game like Halo or Ninja Gaiden for your Xbox whatever...and then after you've beat the game...people had already finished a few mods..you go online and download new levels FREE for your games...or in the case of Halo..get an entirely NEW game, using the Halo engine but completely different in every other aspect. Now THAT would be awesome...and I believe that is where console gaming IS headed..maybe not with the Xbox 360..but you can tell already just by looking at its features..that PC's and consoles are going to intregrate more and more together until they really work as one.
