Pat Robertson attacks creation: Let's not make ourselves a joke

Excerpt:

In providing his feedback on Tuesday’s debate between Ken Ham of Answers in Genesis and Bill Nye ‘the Science Guy,’ televangelist Pat Robertson went off on a two-minute monologue on Wednesday about why he holds to the opinion that Christians need to get over their young earth beliefs.

Speaking on his daily broadcast of the 700 Club, Robertson focused on the calculations and analysis of Bishop James Ussher, the Church of Ireland Archbishop and scholar who once dated the world as being 6,000 years old.

“Let’s face it,” he said. “There was a bishop in the Middle Ages there—1800′s or something—who added up the dates listed in Genesis and he came up with [a calculation that] the world had been around for 6,000 years. There ain’t no way that’s possible.”

“Anybody that’s in the oil business knows that he’s drilling down two miles, three miles, four miles underground. You’re cutting through all these layers laid down by the dinosaurs,” Robertson asserted. “And we have skeletons of dinosaurs that go back about about 65 million years.”

The televangelist then began to amp up his remarks by scoffing at those who believe in a young earth, calling for reformation among Christians.

“[T]o say that it all came about 6,000 years ago is just nonsense, and I think it’s time we come off of that stuff and say this isn’t possible,” he declared.

“So, there was a Big Bang. So? That doesn’t mean it came spontaneously. Nobody knows what caused the Big Bang, but I say God did it,” Robertson continued. “God’s in charge of all this. God’s in control. He is the author of all life, but we’ve got to be realistic that the dating of Biship Ussher just doesn’t comport with anything that is found in science.”

Hi TBB,

Well, the Scriptures do account that the delusion will be a 'strong' one. That even the elect may fall if God does not cut short those days.

As far as I'm concerned, Christians can believe whatever they want. It's the born again children of God that I'm interested in being in agreement with.

God bless you.

Well, we agree on something, Ted! I don't listen to Pat Robertson at all anymore. I think his age is affecting his mind.

... the Earth is the center of the Solar System (the Universe, actually) and the Earth is Flat.

Both teachings were seriously held and defended precepts of Christianity according to the Bible in times past.

Does this suggest anything to anyone?

I saw that article before. I was a bit surprised by Pat's response. I was expecting something different from what I thought was a "super conservative christian".

I was shocked also which is why I wanted to share. I think that very popular preachers, particularly national televangelists, reach so many people and their words carry considerable weight.

I think we all just need to stay informed on Chrisitan's positions.

Well, I believe Pat's response is correct.

I am not threatened by science. The biggest problem with science is that its so relative in its truths. It is constantly disproving itself over and over again. I enjoy the details of God's creation it finds, but it can't hold its weight because of the contradictory nature of its legacy.

I think many other people hold your same position.

I believe however that the bible is either true or not true. Too many people grab the pieces they want.

I personally believe the bible to be the true, infallible Word of God.

If you believe the Bible is the true, infallible Word of God, why do you reject what it teaches? The Bible says that Jesus is the Word of God, not the Bible or scripture.

I believe that the Bible contains true and infallible scripture but I do not believe in a young Earth. Scripture says exactly what God intended for it to say but it is not easy to understand many of the hidden mysteries.

That's the whole point of science and what makes it work!

Testing, experimenting, gathering evidence, debating, refuting ideas and creating new theories is called progress. The process of 'constantly disproving itself' means that we've got computers, smartphones, modern medicine and spaceships rather than being stuck in the middle ages.

I agree!

And I ask science; what in the world happened to Pluto? His life is in ruins now as he is no longer a planet.

What happened science? Change your mind again?

My own little saying is "science is science until science proves their own theory wrong. No that's not right, science is always right until science proves their own theory in error, and replaces error theory with new found theory that is absolute truth."

It's a vicious circle. I think of them like a dog who constantly is chasing their own tail. Spinning around in a circle, thinking they have arrived somewhere, when really they are still chasing the tail of the dog.

Lol.

No silly (said in fun), I'm talking about this lonely guy, the one with a new identity crisis added on to his existing insecurity of being the smallest *shall I say, former planet* (I whisper the words that are in between the 'begin * sign' and the 'end * sign').

:) Well, in all fairness, the object is still there. They just decided, after technology helped to provide more data on that lonely guy who sits so far out there that we will never get invited to dance:p, that he wasn't big enough to play with the Big Dogs.:D I know his pain. (See my avatar)

Jesus is the Word, which is the Scripture. What religion would use that to diminish Scripture? Good grief. Here we go again. Before it gets started, I'm not going there.

There are not many hidden mysteries in the Word, except possibly prophecy, which is unfolding now.

I once watched a video but now I can't remember which one it was but it said that Pat Robertson and TBN are both under the control of Freemasonry. I could certainly believe that. If you watch both they are different from any of the other Christian programming. I'll have to try and find it.

Whether or not they are, Pat Robertson gets more senile with every year. He often says "off the wall" things.
