It was just him on that stage, and no one else but him, his axe, and if you watch that video posted on this thread about the Orchestrion album, he shows you how he does it. Not sure if "triggering" i the word, but that is surely what I would call it, considering my limited knowledge on the subject.

I'm a big Methany fan as well; his work with Joni Mitchell was also excellent, especially on the live album she put out with him

Smokin album, shadows and light, and he was only 25 at the time.

Yes, I watch his DVD of "The Way Up" almost once a week. He is definitely an innovator and plays music like no one else I've ever heard before.I was truly inspired, and honestly, the Orchestrion CD is great

The one time I got to see him live, Pat and the band entered the auditorium from the back in marching band style. Pat led the way playing the trumpet. Really good show. "Phase Dance" is probably my favorite, though I like almost every album I've ever bought by him.

You're right. I saw that tour at Radio City Music Hall. I also saw the Off Ramp, We Live Here, and Still Life Talking tours. I wanted to see the Orchestrion show but didn't have $125 for a ticket. Plus the trip from NJ to Brooklyn is pretty expensive on its own.

Big fan. One of the best guitarists alive. That said, I saw him in concert and he was disappointing. Oh the quality was there, but he went on excessively long solo tangents and played a lot of songs that people were going "??." Skipped over a lot of "famous"/popular tunes which you'd think he would play. Oh well.

That's typical of Metheny. Every time I've seen him he's played stuff that's never been recorded, or at least released. Or he'll take familiar tunes and reinvent them. Personally, I could spend hours listening to him improvise. That's when he's at his best.

Metheny is a great guitarist. Some of the stuff is a bit edgy and really hard-core jazz, but all very well done.
