Metheny is sheer genius.

One of the best concerts I ever saw was Pat Metheny Group in 1979...they were touring the American Garage album...INCREDIBLE!!! Pat was primarily playing that old L5 he has that he holds the strap on with an old toothbrush!! LOL!!

I particularly favor the back-to-back releases Pat Metheny Group (1978) and American Garage. I think San Lorenzo is one of the most beautiful pieces ever written...and kudos to Lyle Mays for his subtly building piano solo on that one...whew!! Takes me places!!

I saw Pat again in the mid-90s, when he was really into guitar synth, and though it was incredible, I actually preferred the aforementioned show in '79. But, when he was doing guitar-synth stuff, he kinda reminded me of when Chick Corea would do flurry-solos on his old MiniMoog back in the days of Return To Forever....pretty cool stuff.

Metheny magic, fer shure!

I am a HUGE Pat Metheny fan. I first started listening to him back in 1981. My first exposure was his self-titled "White Album". I would listen to side A with San Lorenzo and Phase Dance over and over. My next record was "New Chautaugua". It was on to "Off Ramp" and Travels and every LP since. I really loved the "Letter from Home" era with Pedro Aznar's beautiful vocals. The live LP "The Road to You: Recorded Live in Europe" is my all time favorite. I just love the sound quality.

Have you seen the "Bright Size Life" video with Pat and Ulf Wakenius? Awesome!

To be honest, i have a hard time giving pat metheny proper respect. When i listen to american garage, it just seems too... chipper. Can someone recommend some specific songs or other albums/dvds that might help me dig him?
Metheny is hit-and-miss for me - and American Garage is one that I could never get into. If I were you, I'd check out Bright Size Life, which also features the great Jaco Pastorius on bass, and is much much much different.

Another version of this track

is on what I think is his greatest album "travels" (double live)
80/81 is another of his you might check out-it also has michael brecker on sax, and jack dejohnette on drums.
He's got a huge discography. Some very avant garde stuff. I like almost all of it. Two albums you may want to avoid ,though, are "zero tolerance for silence" and "song X" -unless you like dissonance.

I'm a guitar player (35 years) and tried on Matheny many many times and couldn't see it. Then one night flipping through the channels there he was at perhaps the Newport jazz festival, with just a bassist and drummer. I thought ok lets watch the man live up to his accolade. That performance knocked me out of my chair and changed my 10 year opinion of him in 1 hour.

You know some people do it for me others don't look at Jeff Beck. I have never been able to get into his music.

I watch his DVD of "The Way Up" almost once a week. He is definitely an innovator and plays music like no one else I've ever heard before. (Synth guitar is pretty cool too.)

I'm looking forward to his new Orchestrations project. You should check it out on his website if you havent already.

If you guys are really into him, you should check out his newer material... I mean Bright Size Life was great and so have been his orchestral performances... but I just saw him a few months ago at the Fillmore in Miami.... PHEW!!!

His latest tour is called "Orchestrion" where he has triggered an entire band with his guitar... So much improv and technological creativity... I was truly inspired, and honestly, the Orchestrion CD is great, but you HAVE to see a show to understand what's going on...

So gifted....
