  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Friends,

Part 2 of how to grind your own telescope mirror without being reduced to tears.

God bless you,

Pastor Bill

I'm highly impressed that you have the patience to do something like that. I'd be sorely tempted to at least start with a machine and see if I couldn't work in some 'randomness' at the end of the sanding process. :) I think it's useful, and quite entertaining however (especially when you aren't personally doing all the work) to see how it can literally done by hand.

FYI, I thoroughly enjoyed part 2. I can't wait for the "cry like a baby" installment. :D

Michael,

A good part of the work can be done by a grinding machine. My Astronomy club has one. However, I wanted to learn about the process and I thought it was a good idea to do the whole thing by hand. My hope is to create a 12 inch mirror someday. With that project, i will definitely use the machine for part of it.

Peace,
Bill

Pastor Bill,

I can understand how you're sure that you have the right depth in the center, but I'm fuzzy on how you're sure that the curvature along all the sides are even in the ballpark. Could you explain a bit about how you're handling the curvature aspect?
