The process of reason called rationalism will enable the egoist to know what is right and wrong by determining in life what is pleasurable or painful. Because humans desire to live, the strength of egoism is in pride and self-interest. Only when a person seeks their own welfare and well-being can that person help and value other people thus, it is in my best interest and societies to take care of myself first.

Perhaps existentialism can best be understood as “situational ethics.” It is the individuals feelings, thoughts, and emotions that make an act right or wrong and not a list of rules or standards formulated by society. The belief that others (God, angles, society, etc..) do not determine ones life will cause one to accept their responsibilities, recognize their good decisions, and admit their bad choices in efforts to make their life better. Because someone else does not determine what is ethical, I can not hid behind them, use them as a crouch, or as an excuse for my actions. I must accept responsibility and understand that I am nothing else that what I make of myself.
