I think its mainly simbolic of judgement day. Those covered with the red blood of the Lord will be spared by God. But, don't trust me, I'm agnostic.

It was symbolic; God often works in ways that will leave a message for future generations to further understand His ways. If He were to just say "Hey, I'm going to kill all the newborns except for those who believe in me.", there would be no parallel with Christ.

It showed the faith of the people. Under the new covenant, we are covered under the blood of the pure sacrificial lamb Jesus Christ our Savior.

No, God didn't need them to put the blood on the doorposts so HE would know who believed and who didn't, as He knows our hearts... it was for their sakes He asked them to do it. It was like an ACT of faith, also being symbolic of the act of faith in making a commitment to Jesus Christ, thereby His shed blood being applied to the doorposts of our own hearts. When God sees the blood, He sees the sacrifice of His own Son.
