  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

To add some detail...it's the story of the courtship between Jim Elliot, famous Christian missionary and martyr, and his wife. I guess it's considered something of a classic amongst books of this type. It's a step by step account of the path they took in their relationship, and there's some good insight on a lot of different aspects of being involved with someone :)

Has anyone else read this book? What was your opinion on it? My boyfriend and I have started reading it together. It seems pretty good so far. . .

I have read the book. IMO, it is extremely drawn-out and seems filled with emotional manipulation. Severing all ties with a romantic interest to guard emotional purity then coming back to them months later hoping they're still interested? Yes, it's kind of a sweet love story, but it also seems highly unrealistic in application for most couples.

Does it involve saving the first kiss until marriage, not going on unsupervised dates, and other cliches?

It also involves what I consider emotional blackmail. I know some may disagree with me, especially since Passion & Purity follows the "I Kissed Dating Goodbye" sort of trend, but I disagree with the premise behind it. Don't let someone know you have feelings for them until you're ready to get hitched, even if that means practically falling off the face of the earth and not even contacting your romantic interest for two years because you don't want them to think you're "getting too involved". I fail to see how this cycle of, "gee, I like spending time with you. Oh, wait, God's telling me to back away. Wait, I'm back. No, I'm dropping out of your life again. Ah, now I'm ready to marry you and confess I love you" spares a person's emotional wellbeing more than being honest.

By no means am I advocating rushing into a commitment, but I don't know how a person could possibly know they want to spend the rest of their life with someone if they never confess a romantic interest until the marriage proposal happens.

I can't properly comment on this as we've not finished the book yet.

However, I haven't gotten the impression from reading so far that the author is insinuating we are to commit such emotional blackmail. Neither do I believe she expects us to follow exactly in their footsteps. Their story is their story. However, one can still learn and be inspired by others journeys and the lessons they learned along the way, whilst still operating in the framework of what best works for that particular couple in their particular circumstances. In other words, I'm saying, filter it through your own discernment. It seems you are taking the book too literally.

Though as I said, I cant respond intelligently without finishing reading the book first as we still have quite a ways to go.

Thanks for your input though. :)
