  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I don't advocate partial-birth abortion, unless the mother's life is in danger. Really i don't think there is any need to have that procedure. It isn't even legal anyway... at least not here. Also, it was only used in the late stages of pregnancy 20+ weeks, and it was only used in about 2500 cases a year before it was banned. There are other forms of abortion that can be used late in a pregnancy if needed, but I would think that elective abortion decisions ("I don't want kids right now" types of decisions) could be made before 20 or 21 weeks so that one of the standard (and legal) procedures could be used (obviously there will be the occasional life-threatening case in late pregnancy, but there are other procedures available).

Prior to the ban a few years ago, the only state in America that performed late-term Dilation & Extraction abortion procedures outside of life-threatening complications was New Jersey. Every other state reserved them for emergencies due to the fact that fetal awareness and pain response was present during the time the procedure takes place. Also, it is not as safe a procedure as an early-term abortion.

I am opposed to late-term abortions (except under the most dire of circumstances), due to both the fetus' ability to feel pain and the risk factors involved for the woman.

Agreed.

Also, I highly doubt, given its grotesque nature, any sane woman would choose electively to have the procedure done.

There is no such thing as a "partial birth" abortion. You're either born or you're not. The fetus is aborted or it's not.

I've had healthcare education and nowhere to my knowledge in obstetrics is there such a medical term as "partial birth". However one feels about the abortion debate shouldn't one at least be truthful about describing what the procedure is and what it isn't?

I'm opposed to abortions in the second and third trimester unless of course the mother's life is at risk.

Exactly. "Partial Birth" is a term that was invented by the "pro-life" movement. I too have medical training, and I have never heard the term used in medical literature either. Abortions are medical procedures, so I also believe that we should use their proper medical terms. Late term abortions are called Dilation and Evacuation (aka D&E) or intact dilation and extraction (IDE).

Generally, I don't support D&E or D&X unless there is a valid medical/psychological reason for it.
