Once upon a time in a land not far from you and I, lived a regular ordinary girl, in a not so ordinary town. Ogres, witches, genies and elves all roamed the towns. Now tell me, doesn't that sound a little out of the ordinary for you? Well for Marianna Klassen and her friend Rupert Hoff it was all so normal, it was their home, and for Marianna, everything was going to change. Her beautiful brown eyes and bright loving smile were well known with the boys in town. She had broken many a heart, but this was only because she did not wish to break her own. In this fairytale land, she believed that once her heart was given, she would never be taken back. Some thought this a childish idea. Marianna would occasionally court one of the men in town, but this was often short lived for they never met her high standards. Until now...

~*~

Marianna Klassen was walking through the street one day when Rupert came running toward her, "Marianna! You need to come with me!"
Marianna look at him, very confused, "Goodness Rupert, what do you want? You really need to pick better times to jump me with your stupid ideas! I'm in a hurry! I have to get to Annalisia's house for piano practice."
Rupert had been happier lately do to the fact that he had found the love of his life...a young maid named Gwyndolyn. He now knew the wondrous feeling of love, but his dear friend, Marianna was lonely, without this love he knew. Rupert sought out a solution. He went out looking for the perfect match for Marianna. Not just anyone would do for his dear friend. After diligent searching he found someone who he felt was right for Marianna. His name was Garth Bromley. Garth was a tall, handsome young man, who was actually the son of a well known prophet. Rupert encouraged Marianna to attend one of the prophet's ceremonies. Although very reluctant at first, Marianna agreed to attend.
"I will come, but if you dare attempt your matchmaking, Rupert, I shall have your head!"
He winked at her and hurried off to find Gwyndolyn. "You won't be sorry, Marianna, I promise!"

~*~

Sunday came; she walked into the grand hall of the cathedral, amazed by the glorious marble pillars and the splendid aroma of perfume worn by all of the fine women in town. They wore marvelous gowns and the men who accompanied them matched their beauty in their black suits and large top hats, this made her feel slightly out of place. She fingered her simple blue gown as she sifted through the people in their pompous attire. I am but a simple peasant girl, how can I ever possibly fit in? Just as that thought popped into her head she accidentally bumped into someone behind her as she backed up, "Oh, please forgive me sir." She turned around to see a handsome, broad shouldered man, about 20 in age with dark brown hair, quite the same as hers. His deep blue eyes shone like the sky on a clear day, she found herself staring at him and her face flushed to a bright rosy color.
"Oh, tis no problem milady, my name is Garth Bromley. I am the son of the prophet. I see you are new to our congregation. Please, may I help you? Are you looking for someone?"
Marianna smiled; "I came with my friend Rupert but I seemed to have lost him." she looked around trying to avert her gaze from the strong figure which towered in front of her. He could not seem to take his eyes off of her.
"I have told you my name but pray tell what is yours?" His smile was intoxicating! How could she not look at him, her mouth opened and the words almost didn't come out.
"My name is Marianna Klassen." she had never been shy around men, why should this one be so different? "I was told that your father was quite the speaker." She froze when he did not answer but with a simple nod. Those eyes! She felt like they were peering into her very soul! "I...er...I must be going, I have to find my friend, he will surely be looking for me." just at that moment Rupert appeared behind her. She couldn't believe what wonderful timing he had. "Ah, Rupert! We should be finding a seat, wouldn't want to miss the service simply because we were late to be seated!" Rupert looked at her being quite puzzled.
"But my friend, the service does not start for another hour, we have plenty enough time to dawdle!" he smiled and noticed why she was nervous, in front of her stood the tall powerful frame of the prophet's son. He stood far taller than Rupert, this was not hard to achieve, and even Marianna was a head taller than her friend.
"Ah! Hello there my friend, I am Rupert, I believe we met the other day." Rupert smiled at the man, his slightly crooked teeth fully visible.
"Rupert! My friend, how have you been since I saw you last?" Rupert and Garth walked off speaking to each other. Marianna felt so alone, how could she feel this alone while she was surrounded by this many people?! She did not know whether to follow them or not, but by the time she decided to it was far too late; they had already slipped into the crowd. From behind her she heard someone clear their throat.
"Hello there." she turned around to see a young man who stood about as tall as she, he wasn't as robust as Garth but his dark brown eyes were filled with joy and flickered with a bit of curiosity, "My name is Jude Artherton, I am the son of the new doctor in town, might I have the pleasure of escorting such a lovely lady as yourself to her seat?" He took her hand to lead her to a seat she didn't feel as intimidated by him as she did Garth. They sat down in a pew about the middle of the church. She and Jude spoke about different things and made small talk. She noticed that he had a very captivating smile. After talking a while he stopped and exclaimed "Why, how silly of me! We've been talking for a whole 5 minutes and not once have I asked for your name! How un-gentlemanly of me!" He cleared his throat and looked at her trying to act serious although a smile shone through, "Milady, pray-tell may I ask your name"
She blushed. "My name is Marianna Klassen. I am terribly sorry for not introducing myself before. Tis my fault entirely, Mr. Artherton." she laughed and smiled warmly at him. Just then the service began. She could not see Rupert so she stayed in her seat with Jude. After the service was over Jude turned to her and smiled, "My Dear Miss Klassen, I must take my leave, but we shall meet again, I promise." he took her delicate hand and placed his lips upon it as though to seal his promise. Then he turned around and left through the large oak doors. She stayed for a little while searching for Rupert, but to no avail. Finally when she went outside, to find that he and Garth had been waiting on her.
"I am so sorry Marianna! I thought that you were following me when I left! We were looking for you all over the place! Garth and I were just speaking about you he wishes to invite us to his home for dinner; I suppose your parents would have no reason to disapprove of such?" Rupert smiled and winked at her. Garth paid no attention to Rupert; he was too busy looking at Marianna.
"I'm afraid we're having family in for dinner today. May I be so bold as to ask you to post-pone that offer till next week?" Marianna smiled, "Unless it’s a bother, sir."
Garth smiled back at her, "My dear, bring your whole family if you like! I’m sure my mother would not disapprove of the company, and my father loves to talk."
"I shall see you next week then Mr. Bromley."
"Till next week Miss. Klassen." He bowed and walked off.

sorry I have no idea why it added the other stuff!

Rupert could wait no longer, "So my friend what do you think of my matchmaking skills? Does Mr. Bromley not suit you perfectly?!" Rupert was overjoyed. Marianna could not say that she did not find the prophet's son very attractive, she had noticed, though, that all of the women her age had been swooning over him. With their scandalously low cut shirts that she thought at any moment would burst from the seams from their tightness. How utterly terrifying it all was to her, that a woman would throw herself at a man like that! It was disgraceful, but she found Garth...err Mr. Bromley's attraction to them at a minimal, in fact something had scared her. He had not taken an eye off of her whenever she was around him! He hardly knew her and she thought herself not to be half as beautiful as those other women.
"Well Rupert, I shall have to ponder what I've seen today, next week we shall see whether or not I like who you've chosen."
~*~

"Annalisia! Are you there?" Marianna banged frantically on the door of her friend's house, Annalisia came to the door and looked at Marianna very puzzled.
"My dear Mari, it is not like you to show up on a day like today! Whatever could be the matter? You do not look distraught so I suppose you news is of a good nature." From the look on Marianna's face Annalisia could tell that it was something good. She invited her into the house and the two girls walked into the parlor and sat down in the chairs overlooking the river.
"Anna, you'll never guess who I've met today?! I met Garth Bromley! He is so divine I thought I should've fainted nearly in his presence!" Anna looked at her friend and raised her brow.
"Men are like rats, Marianna, RATS, you can't trust them. Although I must admit that some of them are quite enjoyable to look at." She stood up to go and bring Marianna some tea. "They are witches the lot of them," she smiled and set down the small pot of tea and two shiny white cups, "we should burn the lot of them!" The two laughed. They were suckers for nice looking men, but they had to admit neither of them had found one worth keeping yet.
"I know what you mean Annalisia, but he seems different! I know you think this unwise but I also have a back-up" Annalisia looked at her friend as if she were amazed. "I know, but don't scold me yet. His name is Jude Artherton, he is a nice gentlemen but I must give this Mr. Bromley a chance first. After all Rupert did take the time to find him, and I trust Rupert so."
Annalisia smiled, "Suit yourself, as if one man wasn't bad enough, you have two, and the one who picked out the man out was a man himself! You cannot trust the taste of men. Like I said," she lifted her hand and laughed loudly "BURN THE WITCHES!" they both broke into laughter and then went on the rest of the evening to talk about the matter. Finally Marianna had to go home, Twas nearly dark outside and she was not close to home.
"Be safe Mari, and stay away from the witches!" she laughed again as she waved to her friend as she rode away in her buggy.
~*~

A few weeks went on, Marianna and Garth began to spend time together, her mother and father thought that the church was wonderful so they began attending it. This way Marianna got to see more and more of Garth, she began to think that maybe Rupert had made a good choice after all.
Her dream had come true! She had finally found the love of her life! Or was this, also, to good to be true?
"I can't believe how perfect this is, Rupert! You actually picked a winner!" Rupert put his hands on his hips and laughed.
"What is that supposed to mean my friend? I am not bad at matchmaking! Did you imagine that I would ever pick someone out for you whom you would not like?" She laughed.
"May I interrupt?" Garth leisurely strolled around the corner, his smile was beaming on his face. He took Marianna's hand and placed a kiss upon it. "I would like to speak with you...alone, if Rupert would not mind." Rupert smiled at Marianna and Garth.
"I shall take my leave then," he chuckled "I can see when I'm not wanted!" He winked at Garth. She smacked his arm. "I could never guess why you would want to speak with her, she is such a witch!"
"Go away Rupert. Before I have to catch you on fire like the little witch you are!!!" She smiled at Garth who actually began to laugh. She thought his laugh was so soothing.
When Rupert was out of sight Garth took Marianna's hand in his and lead her into the forest. They walked in silence for a few moments until Marianna's foot got caught in the root of a nearby tree sending her flying forward. With one purposeful motion Garth put his strong arms around her to catch her. He pulled her up and drew her close to him. She looked up at his face, she could see that lovely intoxicating smile that she had grown to love. She could feels the blood run to her face; he did not let go of her, pulling her closer to him as though to bridge any gap that might still remain. She could feel the warmth of his body against her. She felt so safe in his arms. He caressed her cheek with his strong hand. "Marianna, if I may have the pleasure of calling you so." She smiled
"Yes, you may Mr. Bromley." although she did not want to she removed herself from his embrace and steadied herself and backed up against the side of the tree. He came closer his searching eyes stared deeply and lovingly into hers.
"Marianna, you are quite catching." he gently moved the stray hairs that had fallen in front of her eye.
Marianna blushed and could not keep back the smile which rose to her lips, "You are quite charming yourself Mr. Bromley." He seemed to be lost in her eyes.
"I think I am in love with you, Marianna. No, I know I am in love with you!"
Marianna moved away and began to walk again. "Mr. Bromley, but we have but just met."
He grabbed her hand with one quick motion, stepped in front of her, as though he was afraid she would walk away forever if he did not stop her. She was right, they had just met a few weeks before. "Marianna, every time I see you my heart races, when you touch me even when we simply shake hands I feel as though I am on fire within. I love you."
Marianna nodded and raised her brow then lowered her head to hide a smile, "Very well spoken Mr. Bromley."
He cupped her chin in his hand and raised it till her face met his. "I must be leaving my dear, although I wish I could stay,” He ran his fingers through her silky brown hair. “Till next time, Miss Klassen.” He placed his lips gently on hers and kissed her. She felt as though she would melt! Perhaps he did love her. This had to be love! He walked away…I’ve finally found the one…I simply know it!
~*~
Several months went by. Marianna and Garth seemed to grow closer. This was too good to be true!
Yes, it was far too good to be true. Marianna told Annalisia of this and she was thrilled for her, "Perhaps you've finally found one of those men worth keeping! I am so happy for you!" then Annalisia's face turned serious, "Still, be careful. Like I said MEN ARE RATS!" these words would stick with Marianna, certainly not him...Mr. Bromley was a gentleman!

Rupert found Marianna sitting on the bench that her father had made her, they had put it at her favorite spot near the riverbank, he always knew he could find her here. She turned around at the sound of his boot crunching a twig that lay underneath him. She smiled but that smile quickly drained and was replaced by a forlorn look. "Rupert, whatever is the matter? I hope everyone is well. No one has fallen ill I hope!"
He took her hands in his. "My dear Marianna, I hope you will not hate me for what I am about to reveal to you. It is of a most alarming and unexpected nature." She looked at him with a forlorn face, knowing that whatever it was it couldn't be good.
"Rupert, whatever could you say that would make me hate you?" she smiled "You are such a wonderful friend! I could never hate you!" He handed her a scroll, tied with a ribbon and sealed with the prophet's seal. "What is this?" She took the scroll in her hands and began to open it as Rupert explained.
"Garth gave this to me and I thought you should see it. I am sorry that I even introduced you to such a scoundrel as he. He does not deserve you." Marianna understood what he meant when she read the note. ~

My Dearest friend Rupert,

I am incredibly sorry to inform you that I do not agree with the young lady you chose for me...she is dismal and much to plain for my eyes to look upon, and atop that...I must say that it would disgrace me and my rank to have her at my side...it's a despicable match...I could NEVER love someone like her!

Garth Bromley

The letter trembled in her hand. Annalisia was right, men were not but witches. They were like rats, no, the fleas which crawl upon those filthy vermin...no, they were like the amoebas which crawled on the fleas. No, she dared to even say that he was lower than them.
Rupert could see the pain in her eyes, the tears coursed down her face. "My dear, dear friend, it is my entire fault, I introduced you to him thinking that he was someone worthy of you. I was wrong Marianna; I only wished that you would find the happiness that I have found with Gwyndolyn. Marianna forced a smile through her tears.
"I am so unfortunate; I could never find a man who could be half as wonderful as you are my friend. It is ok," she said as she wiped the tears from her eyes, "at least I seen this before I became too attached to the not so gentlemanly Mr. Bromley." in her mind she knew that she had become attached, he had made her care. She had thought she loved this man "You are a true friend, Rupert, thank you." She turned around and sat back on her bench, smoothing the edges of her skirt.
"Would you like some time alone Mari. I could leave." He put his hand on her shoulder.
"Yes, thank you, Rupert, I suppose I shall see you at church tomorrow." The thought of having to see that no good Mr. Bromley tomorrow shot pain through her heart. She felt Rupert place a kiss upon her head.
"Be safe Marianna, I shall see you tomorrow." She heard him walk away and she could feel her heart breaking into pieces. How could Garth say such things about her? How could he lead her on like that and then crush everything that she thought to be so real?!
"I shall not let this smother me," she said under her breath. She thought of her wonderful friend, Mr. Artherton. "I will see someone tomorrow who will brighten my spirits. Dear Mr. Artherton. I know he is a true gentleman." She remembered what Annalisia had said. "Men are like rats, Marianna, RATS!" She thought to herself...surely not all of them. She wiped a final tear from her eye. She looked toward the sky as though she were looking toward heaven for the answer to her problems to write itself in the sky. Then she picked up the note, and walked slowly back to her home.
~*~

The next day Marianna, for the first time since she had some to this church, felt like her heart was going to explode. She had to see Garth. Her "dear Mr. Bromley" who had lied to her, disgraced her to her friend. How could she even speak to him?! He had shattered her heart. He would pay. After church she found him outside the church where he normally met her to walk her home. She asked to see him alone. Her voice was cold and cross. He followed her behind the church. "What is it Marianna?"
She whirled around. "You will call me Miss Klassen. You know very well what is wrong! Mr. Bromley! How could you do such a retched thing like this to me? I thought you were a gentleman, a man of pride a man of...a man of...love! How could you deceive me like this? My heart is broken and shattered, and yet you stand here showing no pain!" He looked at her in amazement now knowing fully what he had done.
"Please, Marianna, you have to understand my pain!"
The blood rushed to her face she was as angry as ever. "PAIN!? WHAT PAIN!?!"
"Marianna...I...I just...I can't! You have to understand this. I cannot love you! We are so different. It would never work!"
She burst into tears. "NO! You don’t want to love me! This is of your own choosing." She gained her composure and looked at him with a fiery anger in her eyes. "I only wish to cause you the heartache and pain that you have caused me! I leave you now with the hope that you never are loved I curse you, Garth Bromley, I curse you to a life without love...and I will feel NO pity for you!" She ran off and jumped into her carriage before he could stop her.

That night Garth laid in bed, a feverish sweat broke on his forehead. He deserved it, how could he have said those things. What had possessed him? Who cared anyway? He had all the women in the town and many more after him. He could have his fun with them all and he would forget of her. How could he forget? She was the most wonderful women he'd ever met! Her eyes, they drew him in like a trap. He could smell the wonderful scent of her perfume. He could feel her soft silky hair running through his fingers. He rose from his bed and bashed his foot into a chair. Cursing under his breath he went to a mirror where he looked at himself. "What have you become? Man up, she is just a woman. They can be replaced." In his heart he could hear her voice, singing, they used to do that together. She could never be replaced.
~*~

Marianna was also having problems sleeping. How could he treat her like this? HOW?! She heard a voice coming from outside. She lifted her candle and pulled her robe together. Might as well check and see what it is. I cannot sleep anyway. She stepped out onto her balcony and saw no one. She leaned over the side of the balcony to see a man dressed in black, singing. "Might I ask what you are doing, sir?" The man's head swirled to look at her. All she could see was his eyes. He was cloaked in black from head to foot. He began to climb to the top of the balcony when his foot slipped. Marianna grabbed his arm and helped him over the edge of the balcony. He laughed as he hoisted his foot over the balcony wall.
"Thank you, Milady, You have a very slippery wall there. I do not normally lose my footing. It must have been your breathtaking features. You caught me offguard with your elegance." She blushed. "I hope I did not frighten you."
"No, I am fine. Although at first you did give me quite a fright."
He tilted his head. "What if I'd been an ogre? I should then have had to eat you." She laughed, but he shook his finger at her. "Tis no laughing matter. You'd better be glad I have no taste for beautiful young women, or I'd have to eat you. I make a terrible ogre don't I? I am terrbily sory."
Marianna was puzzled. "Might I ask what you're here for?" He sat down on the banister and put his head in his hand as though he also was not quite sure for why he was visiting.
"My dear, to be quite honest I do not know why I've come." He stopped as though he were thinking about it and then looked at her again. "Do you cook?" She was so confused at this point that she simply nodded. "Very well. We shall go make breakfast for you family."
"Sir, it is but the middle of the night, I doubt they'd want to be disturbed at this time of night, even if it was for food."
"Well, I guess I'll be off then! Goodnight, and pleasant dreams." He took her hand and bowed as he walked away, and as he was walking he simply vanished. She was astounded. How did he do that? She turned around to walk away only to hear him behind her again. "Next time I see you I expect to bake a cake!" She laughed and turned back around to answer him only to find that he was not there. Was she dreaming? Oh well. This must be a dream! She walked back into her room and moved her covers. On her pillow lay a white rose and a note. She set the rose in a vase sitting on her dresser and opened the note~

Goodnight, Milady

How strange this was. How could he have done that? She had not taken her eyes off him yet he had vanished right in front of her! She laid her head down on her pillow and sighed. I wonder if I shall see him again?

The next morning Marianna was sitting outside of Annalisia's house when the two girls saw a young man walking toward them. Annalisia leaned over and whispered in Marianna's ear, "I suspect he's come for you. I have no luck with men. So who is he?" He was getting closer, Marianna noticed the dark hair and the weel pressed suit. It had to be Mr. Artherton. She smiled and rose.
"You must meet him Anna! He's quite the gentleman!" Annalisia shruggered her shoulders and rose to stand beside Marianna. The young man was Mr. Artherton. He walked onto the porch and bowed gracefully. "Hello, Mr. Artherton, what brings you here on a day like today?"
"A question my dear, may I ask as well who your lovely friend is?" Annalisia smiled.
"This is Annalisia Tyndall, Anna, this is Mr. Jude Artherton." Jude bowed once again.
"Pleased to make your acquaintance Miss Tyndall. Now what have I come for? Ah yes! My father is hosting a party tomorrow for someone who has recently come to work with him. You know, a welcome sort of party. I was wondering if I might be so lucky as to escort you to this party? I also now would not like to exclude your friend. Would the two of you like to accompany me to this party?" Annalisia's jaw almost dropped Marianna smiled at her then at Mr. Artherton.
"We would love to come to your party. May I ask as to when you will be by to pick us up?" Artherton smiled in approval.
"How about I meet you here tomorrow..." he paused and thought, "Around five o'clock? That way we will be able to arrive slightly early." Marianna nodded in agreement.
"Then I shall see you tomorrow at five o'clock!" Marianna smiled, Annalisia tapped Marianna on the shoulder.
"Do you think, Mr. Artherton would mind staying for a cup of tea?" He heard her and bowed.
"I am afraid I must take my leave, although tea sounds marvelous. I have to go and see to my brother he is coming in from another town and I must meet him. Goodbye my dears, I shall see you tomorrow." and he bowed, placed his top hat upon his head, and left.
"Well, Marianna, I always told you, you have luck with men. I wish I was half as lucky as you." Annalisia sat down on the swing and took another sip of tea. Marianna sat down beside her and laughed.
"Its better to be single, remember? Men are witches, my friend, witches and rats." Marianna sighed and took a sip of her tea as well, "Oh, goodness Annalisia! We should go into town!" Annalisia looked at her, a puzzled expression fell over her face.
"Goodness, whatever for?" Marianna laughed as she answered
"We're going to a party tomorrow! Let's go get something fabulous to wear!" It didn't take Annalisia but a minute to be in and out of the house with her hat and purse.

~*~

The girls shopped in the different stores in town running around trying to match ribbons, bows, fabrics and dresses. Finally they found the perfect match. When the girls left the store, Marianna was as happy and joyful as could be. She was so busy talking to Annalisia that she accidentally bumped into a man standing right outside the store. "Pardon me sir I..." Marianna froze where she stood. She could not finish the sentence. There in front of her stood Mr. Bromley. Every time she saw him anger raced through her. But how does he feel? she thought.
~*~

Garth stood gazing at her. He longed to take her in his arms and proclaim his love. How could he go on forever like this. He gazed into her eyes. He could see her pain. He could not take his eyes off the beautiful young lady which stood before him. He felt a pain shoot through him like none other. The thought of having hurt her. The only woman he'd ever truly loved. "Maria...Miss Klassen," Oh how he longed to call her by Marianna as he had once done. She would surely slap him for it though. He knew the anger which surged through her. He tried to speak, the words clambered out, not as smooth and seductive as he used to speak to her, but as a poor lost puppy longing for love. "Will you be attending Dr. Artherton's Welcoming party for his new apprentace?" Garth longed only to hear her voice speak to him the way she used to, but her words came out cold and stiff.
"Yes, we were planning on going." the sly look on her face chilled him. "I will be escorted my Dr. Artherton's son, Jude." This remark made him angry. No one could have her but him. Just as he was about to come back with a comment of his own a slender young lady walked around the corner out of the dress store. Her golden hair set neatly upon her head in a bun of curls. She was quite beautiful.
"Garth, why there you are! I was looking for you. I thought you said you were coming in with me to look at the dresses. I trust only you to tell me when I look radiant!" He chuckled at the woman standing next to him, then kissed her cheek. In his mind it hurt him to do so because of Marianna. His pride though, did not allow him to appear hurt. "Who might these ladies be, Garth. Are they your friends?"
Garth could see that Marianna was keeping cool, no doubt trying to hide her anger. Her friend on the other hand. He was afraid she might lash out on his new lady friend if she said anymore. "This is Miss Klassen and Miss Tyndall. They are aquantances of my father's. Ladies, this is Miss Diana Newman." His pride would not even allow her to hear the satisfaction of him addressing her as his friend. He could see some of Marianna's anger flaring into her face. He decided to leave before she or her friend showed to much of their anger. "We must be off Diana. You'll never find a dress dawdling around. I want you to look more marvelous than ever tomorrow night." He smiled and took her hand. He simply nodded to Annalisia and Marianna and walked into the store with Diana on his arm.
~*~

When he stepped inside the store Annalisia's eye quikly darted to Marianna. "That snake of a man. He and that Miss Newman were about to get a tongue-lashing from me if they'd not left. I'm so sorry he treats you so." Marianna took Annalisia's hand.
"You needn't be sorry my friend." a sly grin painted itself across her face. "I saw jealousy in his eyes. He is trying to make me angry and jealous. Let him suffer. See if I care, I won't be bothered by it." as they walked off she thought to herself. Is it true. Do I care? Do I still love him? NO! I cannot! He lied to me and deserves every bit of what he feels!
~*~

That night she laid in bed thinking about the party tomorrow night. Her mind drifted to Garth. She could see him, tall and handsome, dressed in his suit, with Miss Newman on his arm. Why ever did she care? Why did this make her so angry? She had no reason to be jealous. Twas his fault, he did this to his own self...and her. Just then she heard a noise outside her window. Was it the man in black? She rushed to the window and flung the door open finding just who she expected.
The man in black bowed. "Good evening once again, milady. Have you a cake for me this time?" He laughed and sat down on the railing of the balcony. Marianna simply shook her head and sat down beside him. "What? No cake? This is very disturbing news." she could feel him leaning closer to her. "Did you not believe that I would return?" She laughed and stood to her feet. In a way she felt slightly uneasy with him being so close to her.
"I believed you would return, but I knew not when. How am I to have a cake ready for you if I do not know when you're coming?" He nodded and rose. She stood still as he circled her. His arms were crossed in front of him. "If you would tell me your name, I..." He waved his hand stopping her mid sentence.
"I'm afraid that cannot happen, my dear. I am very secretive about myself, if you could not see from my attire." She had noticed that much. His tall, slim figure was covered from head to toe in black. The only features she could see were his eyes. Something in them seemed familiar, she gazed at them. He looked away, he knew that it was not good for someone to stare to long. They might see his secret. Although he so wished that he could tell her. "Well, my love, if you have no cake for me I suppose I shall simply have to settle for you accompanying me on a walk through the apple orchards, I suppose the owner would not mind seeing he is asleep. Unless you are afraid my intentions are anything but honorable." For a second she simply looked at him. The back of his head that is. He had turned around and was looking over the balcony.
"Would you give me a second to change from my night clothes? I should love to accompany you." She could see by the way his eyes were, that underneath his black mask he was smiling. She walked into the room and pulled out a simple ivory and pale green walking dress. As she was changing she could hear him singing to himself. She knew that song...not thinking she began to sing along, "Let me call you sweetheart I'm in love with you, let me hear you whisper that you love me too." She stepped out of her room onto the balcony, the moonlight shining on her dress made her even more radiant. The man in black was leaning on the balcony rail, his booted legs crossed at the ankle. He clapped praising her singing. She stopped suddenly noticing what and to whom she was singing. How could she let herself do that?
"That was magnificent if I do say so myself, my dear. My, don't you look lovely." He grasped her hand and made her twirl around so he could see her in all her radiance. She blushed, this was but the second time she'd met him and yet she felt like she knew him! How could that be? There was something in his voice. Her thought trailed off as the man in black lowered himself down her balcony. She stopped for a second.
"Sir, might I ask how I am supposed to join you if I cannot make it down? If I walk through the house everyone will surely wake." He looked at her for a second then snapped his fingers.
"I know what to do," He walked off leaving her standing there. She sat down on the edge of the balcony looking into her room. She sighed; she could not believe she was going to go on a walk with a complete stranger. Her thoughts were once again stopped short by the knock of a ladder against the balcony wall. "Come my dear, we don't have all night." She climbed down the ladder and they began on their walk.

After coming to a bend in the road which lead out of the apple orchards onto a small hill which looked over the little town. The stars were perfectly visible from here. Marianna yawned, she had to admit that her walk and the company of the man in black were most appreciated, but she was tired. He sat down on the hill and stared at the stars. He patted the grass beside him. "Come little dear, rest for a while, then we shall return to your home." At first she hesitated, then resuctantly lay down on the grass beside him. She looked up at the clouds and felt her eyelids become heavy. Before she knew it she was fast asleep.
~*~

"Marianna, for goodness sake! Wake up now! We have to be getting ready, Mr. Artherton's ball is in a few hours and we have to be getting ready. Who knows how long it will take me to curl and pin all that lovely hair of yours!" Annalisia's wide frame hovered over Marianna. Her brownish blonde hair already sat upon her head in a bun of tight curls and pearls. "I swear, Marianna Klassen I've never seen one who sleeps like you! It's nearly Four o'clock! What time did you go to sleep?" What time did I go to sleep? thought Marianna, then she looked down at her dress. She was still in the green and ivory dress from the night before. How had she gotten back? Was it a dream? Her shoe laid out on the balcony, muddy from the walk through the orchard. Perhaps she had not dreamed it? She was glad that Annalisia had not noticed the dozen white roses which sat a vase which had been empty the night before. Once again she saw the small note which sat upright next to the vase~

Good morning, Milady. I thank you for your kindness last night. Your company on my walk was most delightful. I hope to see you again soon!
~Your Most Humble Admirer~

As soon as she saw the note she sprang from her bed, snatching it up and shoving it into her drawers. The slam of the droors made Annalisia turn around with a startled jump. "Whatever was that for, Mari?" She came closer and inspected the roses, looking at Mari with a sly grin on her face she asked, "And who might those be from? A secret admirer? White roses are not what I would expect, but they are lovely! I did not see them there when I entered. Hmmm...I don't normally miss something like that. Well, never mind your admirer," Marianna opened her mouth to protest but was ignored, "We must get ready, Mr. Artherton and Mr. McClancy will be here shortly." Marianna gave her a confused look, Philip McClancy? "Oh, I'm sorry, I'm just trying so hard to get you up," she grabbed her arm and hoisted her from the bed, "that I didn't even think to tell you that I've found a date to this party, so I won't have to impose upon you and Jude...er I mean Mr. Artherton. I saw it in your eyes the other day. You fancy the good doctor's son. I can see why, he is a fine looking man. I also told him to pick us up here instead of my house." By that time Marianna had pulled her beautiful new gown over her head and Annalisia fastened the back for her. It hugged her curves so perfectly; it was a beautiful rose red color. Annalisia smiled and nodded to Marianna, who twirled around so her friend could see the dress. Anna had already dawned her gown. It was a vibrant purple color, with a white sash tied loosely around her waist.
~*~

After only a few minutes they looked like any of the fine women in England. Five o'clock rolled around and they were sitting outside of Marianna's house. Mr. Artherton and Mr. McClancy pulled up in a dandy looking carriage, both of the men jumped out to help the ladies. Both of the men looked fantastic in their top hats and the suits with the tails. Mr. Artherton's mouth dropped when he saw Marianna. Philip gave Annalisia a sly smile and bowed then kissed her hand. Artherton did the same to Marianna. Both men stood back and looked at the girls.
"Why, I dare say, Philip, I think we shall have the finest looking ladies at the party! I'm almost sorry you came," he winked at the girls, "to think that I might have escorted them both had you not come." Philip helped Annalisia onto the Carriage.
"I must warn you, Artherton, I am very particular about who rides in my carriage. You might be walking to the party, and I shall escort these fine young ladies myself." he chuckled and looked at Annalisia; he had been her admirer for some time. Marianna felt happy that she would not have to share Mr. Artherton, and that Annalisia had found someone to come with who she actually enjoyed being with. (Which she knew was hard to find. Her friend being very particular about such things.)
They arrived at the party and began to mingle. Soon enough Marianna lost Annalisia in the crowd and was alone with Mr. Artherton. To her dismay this did not last long. Of all the people to find her, Bromley. She swallowed back her anger and pride. If she snubbed him or was cross then all the rumors that were being circulated by the local gossips would be confirmed and she'd never hear the end of it. "Good evening, Bromley." Artherton bowed and Bromley mimicked his act, very taken with Marianna. He could not take his eyes off her. The way he stared at her made Artherton uneasy. He took Marianna by the hand. "Please, Bromley, excuse us." he bowed and winked at Marianna, "Would you like to take a stroll through the garden, Marianna?" He could see the sudden shot of anger and jealousy in Garth's eyes. Marianna placed her hand on Jude's arm.
"I would be delighted," she curtsied to Garth, "Mr. Bromley." She walked into the garden.

As they were entering a couple exited, the man leaned closely to his lady friend and whispered something in her ear. She giggled. They left the garden leaving Jude and Marianna completely alone. Jude sat down on a bench and patted the seat beside him.
"Please, come sit by me." His eyes seemed to be mixed between a sparkling smile and a plea for her to comply. How could she not? Since first meeting him he'd been so nice, so gentlemanly. He had become one of her best friends…maybe even more than a friend. She sat down close beside him. She was looking at the roses across the walkway from her, but she could feel his strong eyes staring at her. "Marianna." He touched her arm. She could not help but look into his eyes. He moved closer and closed the gap between them. "I have to tell you something." His voice became very seductive. It reminded her of Garth, it almost hurt her to think of Jude like that. Jude was not as intimidating, and she did not feel like Jude could ever hurt her. His lips brushed against her cheek and he whispered in her ear, "Marianna Klassen, I love you." He kissed her cheek and simply rose to his feet. "Come, I want you to meet my father's newly discovered friend. His name is Joe Plumber. He has invested in some device called a Sham-wow...or I believe that is what it is called." Marianna stood to her feet, confused as ever. She had never had someone tell her he loved her then divert his attentions like this! They walked into the house, he found his father and Joe in the Library.
"Father, you remember Miss Klassen? This is my Father, I believe you've met. This is Mr. Plumber." He introduced her to a tall well-dressed man. His eyes were bright green, they were like none she'd ever seen before. He had a very robust frame, his dark hair framed his features so well, he had a dark prominent mustache set perfectly on his upper lip. She felt herself blush when the man winked at her. Why was he so bold as to wink at a girl he'd never met? He took her hand and kissed it, but did not let go of it just yet. He could not remove his eyes from her.
"Miss Klassen, it is certainly a great pleasure to meet you." Marianna smiled warmly at him.
“It is certainly a great pleasure to meet you as well Mr. Plumber. What, may I ask, brings you to our small town?” He stroked the back of her hand with his thumb and looked down at it.
“I first came for work. But now I can see why I came, and why I intend to stay for a while longer than expected.” He kissed her hand again and smiled. “Would you like to go for a walk in the garden, Miss Klassen? You would not mind me stealing her for a moment would you Mr. Atherton?” He winked at Jude. Jude hesitated a moment then nodded and smiled. He then bowed to Marianna.
“You must promise to bring her back. She is my date after all.” He winked at Marianna. “Don’t let him steal you away from me for too long, Marianna.”
Marianna was confused by these men. Jude just admitted his love, yet he would let her go alone with another man into the garden; and how could anyone be quite so forward as Mr. Plumber to even ask her to go in the first place? She actually felt slightly awkward walking with her delicate gloved hand upon this stranger’s arm. She noticed, however, that as she rounded the corner toward the garden that Garth stood watching them. She pulled herself closer to Mr. Plumber. Oh, how she loved to watch the anger bubble up in Garth’s face. She would show him. She knew not where Atherton was, but she wished it was him that she had been walking with. She had always seen anger in Garth’s eyes at Jude’s presence.
“I have been in town the past few days and yet my eyes have not seen your beautiful face.” She smiled and shrugged her shoulders.
“I do not go into town often. I live a little ways outside the town, you see, I have been into town recently though and have not had the pleasure of seeing you yet.” He smiled. His teeth were so perfectly straight and white. It was quite for a few moments. Joe took in a deep breath. They were in the rose garden, the section farthest away from the house. Over in the corner was a gazebo.
“I will be right back, my dear.” He kissed her cheek. Marianna placed her hand over her cheek as he walked back toward the house. Her mouth agape she stood staring at him as he left. Of all the nerve! I don’t even know him, and he would kiss me?! Just then she saw Mr. Bromley walking around the corner.
“So, I have seen you with two different men tonight. May I ask who your escort is or have you forgotten his name by now.” She shot him an angry look.
“Actually, Jude escorted me. I have found that his company is more desirable than some.” She spun on her heel so that she would not be facing him. He came close behind her. She could feel the heat rising within her. She felt his hand on her shoulder. She could see lightning flash in the distance, a few small rain drops fell on her head. In a few seconds the rain began to pour from the sky. She and Garth ran to the gazebo. It was far closer than the house.
~*~
Garth could see that Marianna shook from the cold rain, he removed his coat and placed it on her shoulders. His white shirt clung to his broad muscular chest. He noticed her eyes showering over him. He came closer to her.
“Marianna. I’m sorry for what I did to you. I was wrong to think of you the way I did.” He closed the gap between them with one purposeful stride and grasped her hands, and in turn she jerked her hands away and widened the gap once again by taking a step back. She held her arms and looked down at the ground. Was she truly this frightened of him? Was she that angry? Well why shouldn’t she be? He thought to himself. She has been wronged and it’s my fault. He wished to comfort her. He wished to wipe away her pain. Yes, it was because most of this pain was his fault but also because he had changed. He loved this woman and feared he could never have her. He could never talk to her as he once did. She sat down on the corner bench of the octagonal gazebo. He could see the pain on her face, the tears that coursed down her face…it was his entire fault. He had done this to her. He watched her as her face lifted to meet his gaze once again.
“Are you aware of what you’ve done to my heart, Mr. Bromley? It has been broken into pieces.” He walked toward her. The look of terror on her face pierced his heart.
“Like I said, Marianna, what I did was unforgivable. But I am asking you to forgive me anyway. Because for the first time in my life I love someone for reasons other than outer beauty. I love you, Marianna Klassen. I love you more than you could ever imagine. I am here now to beg of your forgiveness!” he saw that she could hear the urgency in his voice. Would she forgive him? They stood in silence. His heart throbbed uncontrollably; he feared what he would hear. Then she raised her head and gazed at him. He could not tell what he saw in her eyes.

Marianna could not take her eyes off of his powerful figure. He was the epitome of everything that she had looked for in a man, that is, until he had broken her heart so. How was she to answer him? She knew that she should forgive him. Every bone in her body warred against one another. Should she forgive him and run into his arms and proclaim to him the love that she still harbored for him, or should she shun him and make him suffer longer? She opened her mouth to speak but nothing came out. She saw Garth slowly come closer. She clasped her arms tighter to her bosom and tried not to let the tears welling up in her eyes escape. He sat down on the bench with her. She could feel the warmth of his body. She could smell the spice and the fresh rain that lingered on his body. She wished to sink into his arms and let all of her fears dissolve. No! He would not have that satisfaction! The satisfaction of getting what he so obviously wanted. She stood to her feet and walked to the edge of the gazebo. She leaned against one of the eight wooden poles that held up the roof of the gazebo. The rain still poured over the side. It had been silent for several minutes. She decided to break the silence.
“Mr. Bromley, can you, pray tell, give me a reason as to why I should forgive you?” Her harsh tone seemed to prick him. She could see he was just as frightened as she was.
“Everyone deserves a second chance, my love. I am only asking that you give me one more chance. One chance to prove to you that I have indeed changed, and that I can and do love you.” She could no longer hold back the tears. She did not move as Garth came toward her. He wrapped her in his loving embrace and ran his fingers through her dark chocolate hair.
“My love, my darling, dear Marianna, please give me this one chance for me to show you my love!” he cupped her chin in his strong hand and raised her head. Their eyes met, she could see the sorrow and hope within them. His eyes shifted to her lips. Did he want to…? No! She could not. She would not! But how could she not? Before she could come up with a decent enough reason in her mind Garth had leaned closer. Their lips hovered so close. He dared not kiss her. Well, if he wouldn’t…she would. She leaned into his embrace and claimed his lips as her own. She would hate herself later, she knew she would. How could she not forgive and love this man? She reached her hand to his jaw and let out a muffled sigh. His arms felt so powerful, she felt so safe in his grasp. She did love this man. She knew she did! He removed his lips from hers and leaned back slowly he looked into her eyes once again. Then pulled her closer, he whispered in her ear.
“Please tell me that was a yes. Please tell me you are not toying with me, although I would deserve it.” She moved to where she could see his face. The rain had almost stopped; she could hear the slight pitter patter of rain drops on the roof of the gazebo. Other than that, it was silent. His eyes searched her. Those magnificent blue eyes were like a calming sea, his hair was damp and pressed against his head. A drop of water fell from his chin. She lifted her hand and stroked his strong jaw.
“My answer is that I forgive you.” She pushed away from him and removed the coat that he had placed upon her shoulders. Placing it in his arm she let out a sigh and a stray tear escaped her eyes. “But I cannot love you.” The words shot through her like daggers. She could see that it had the same effect on him. She watched him as he bit his lip and closed his eyes tight, letting out a sigh. She suspected that he was trying to awake from this nightmare. She felt the same way. She wanted to flee from all of this, run away. Just then Garth placed his jacket back on his shoulders and bowed to Marianna. When he raised to look at her she could see that his ocean blue eyes had filled with sorrow and tears
“Goodbye, Miss Klassen.” He stormed off into the rain. She could not help but sit down on the bench and cry.
“Marianna!” she heard a girl’s voice pierce through the rain. “Marianna, is that you?” Annalisia rounded the gazebo and ducked into its safety. “Marianna, you look as though you’ve seen a ghost!” Marianna still watched in the direction that Bromley had left with her hand over her mouth.
“Anna,” she whispered in a barely audible tone, “He kissed me!” as she thought for a second. It was she who had kissed him. “That wretched, no-good, pitiful, wonderful, romantic, perfect imbecile just kissed me.” Tears coursed down her face. She was so happy yet so sad. She did love him. How could she?

Garth sat staring at the fireplace in his study. The embers burned like his heart. Dull and dim. He felt so helpless; at least she had forgiven him. At least he had some hope now. Oh how he loved her. He raised his hand to his lips. He remembered the feel of her soft rose petal lips upon his. How he had dared not kiss her for fear of her fury, but she had pulled him in. She had been the one to kiss him. He had stopped. He was glad that she had not hesitated. He was glad that he could control his emotions. He remembered also her voice as she said, “But I cannot love you.” The thought still burned within him. She had been toying with him, to make him think she had changed her mind. He tossed his cigar into the fire. But she did love him. He could see it. And he loved her. He knew exactly what to do.
~*~
“Joe!” Marianna stood at her front door rather confused. “What brings you out here? It’s kind of late do you not think so?” Joe removed his hat and smiled at her. His eyes looked on her as though he were trying to place a spell upon her.
“Would you like to go for a walk? Last night our little stroll was disturbed by business. I do not wish to keep you long.” She shouldn’t go. She knew she shouldn’t go. It was almost as though his gaze was casting a spell upon her.
“Ok, let’s take a walk.” She couldn’t believe the words were coming out of her mouth. She could not protest! What was happening?! She went walking beside Joe thoughts swirling through her mind. Oh, what could she do?
Just then Garth Bromley rounded the corner. Was he on his way to see her? That could’ve been the only explanation! He looked very surprised to see her with Joe. She could see the pain in his eyes as he forced a smile to his face, his eyes only upon her. “Good morning, Marianna, Mr. Plumber.” She could feel Mr. Plumber shift nervously. What could make him so nervous? Unless he was going to do something what could scare him so? “I was just coming over to see you, Marianna. Could I interrupt for a moment, and speak to you alone?” She loved his smile. The way he looked at her. She opened her mouth to say yes.
“No, Mr. Bromley, I’m afraid I have other business to attend to.” She stopped in astonishment. No?! Why had she said no! She wanted to say yes! Perhaps Joe had placed a spell on her. She saw all the joy that was once in Garth’s face dissolve. SHE DID NOT WANT TO SAY NO!
“We will be off now, Mr. Bromley.” Joe pulled Marianna along behind him. She turned and looked at Garth. She could see the pain and confusion wrestling in his eyes. She wanted to take that away. Joe wouldn’t let her go. His arm clasped around hers. They stopped for a moment. He looked into her eyes; those eyes. It was like he was looking right into her heart!
‘What do you want? I shouldn’t be out here. I barely know you.” His smiled was sinister, it shot fear down Marianna. He leaned toward her and kissed her. She pulled back her head in defiance but then. Out of nowhere she felt sleepy. He laughed as she passed out in his arms.
~*~
“Argh, what is wrong with me!” Garth said as he began walking away from Marianna’s house. “How could I be so foolish as to act like I do?” He picked up a rock and threw it into the little stream. “The one time it meant something. I messed up. The one time I really wanted to change. Maybe I am cursed.” He sat down on the side 0of the path and fingered a flower that hung from the vine on the tree. He bowed his head, a tear streaked down his strong handsome face. “I truly am sorry. I did not mean to break her heart; although I should’ve seen that coming.” He lifted his eyes toward heaven and sighed. “God, I know she forgave me. I truly have repented. Please lift this curse from me.” Another tear escaped down his face. He felt as though a great burden had been lifted off of him. He must find Marianna!

“Joe?” Marianna’s eye fluttered open. She was lying in a canopied bed. The white lace covers bunched all around her. This is always what she had dreamed of as a little girl. This was what she thought a princess should have. She bolted up from where she lay. This was not a dream. The last thing she had remembered was Joe’s lips upon hers, and then everything had blacked out. When she looked around the room she saw that it was furnished with the most beautiful things she had ever seen! A closet with gown like only royalty should wear. There were jewels laying on the dresser and fine perfumes upon it as well. She turned to see Joe sitting on the side of her bed.
“How are you feeling, my lovely Marianna?” She scooted away from him. What was he doing here?
“Joe, where am I?” He gave her a roguish smile.
“Why, you are in your new home my dear. This is where you will stay, with me. Is that not marvelous?” He scooted closer to her on the bed. She frantically flung the covers away and darted for the windows. They were locked.
“I demand you let me go at once, Mr. Plumber!” Her voice shook. He stood from the bed. He looked even taller and more sinister when standing.
“I will give you time to settle in. Mark my words though dearest, I shall return for you tomorrow.” He walked out the door, leaving her alone. She looked out the window to see if she could get an idea of where she was. She saw nothing of any great significance. Oh how she wished Garth would’ve stopped them. How she wished he could be here now to comfort her. All she could see was the man standing wet as could be in the gazebo; his head hung low with shame, begging her to forgive him. Why had she told him she could never love him? Why had she lied? She did love this man; more than she had ever loved another in her life. Would she even see him again?
~*~
It had been all evening and Garth decided he would return to see Marianna. When he arrived he was surprised to see Jude sitting beside Marianna’s mother. “What is the matter?” he ran to their side, Marianna’s mother was crying.
Jude stood to his feet, “I must leave. She said that Marianna left several hours ago with a man and hasn’t returned. I must go and find her.” Garth’s heart broke into a million pieces. He had watched her walk away! That man had taken her. He felt anger boil within himself.
“I’m coming with you. I know who took her.” Jude whirled around.
“Who?!”
“It was Joe Plumber. Do you know where to find him?” All the color drained from Jude’s face. He had to force the words from his mouth.
“I wished him good travels this morning; he said he had to leave. He could be anywhere! We could check the inn he stayed at; see if they have any leads. If he has hurt her I swear he shall pay!” He ran off toward the inn, Garth followed close behind.
