  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The parish a friend attends recently got a new pastor and associate pastor. The former pastors were very dedicated to the life issues but the new priests eliminated all the pro-life activities in the parish. My friend wants to find another parish, but I told her to stay as she might be the only pro-life voice in the parish. Should she stay and fight or find another parish.

Why did they get rid of them? If it's lack of time or something like she, I'd say she and other parishioners should volunteer to run them, taking as much of the workload off the priest as possible.

If it's because they disagree with the Church, I'd find this out, talk with them, and then go to the Bishop. You can't be pro-abortion and Catholic. I can't think of a more important issue other than disrespect to the Mass and the Eucharist, and we're supposed to report those abuses to the bishop.

My advice would be to stay and try to get the activities back, but if the priests aren't pro-life, they probably don't agree with other doctrines either, and it's not a parish I'd want to be in. Staying can be important, but if it's endangering one's spiritual welfare, she needs to find someplace better.

I got the impression that the priests are not pro-life. My friend has tried several times to get pro-life intentions in the Mass, especially during Respect Life month and the pastor refused. In this Archdiocese their are many priests who give lip-service only to Respect Life issues and they hide behind the "Peace and Justice" curtain. I am not trying to downplay the peace and justice issues but so many pro-choice Catholics lurk in that realm that it is difficult to pinpoint their intentions. I am somewhat of an acitvist and fighter so I still think she should inform the bishop and stay at her parish.

I think your advice is good, Monica. Staying and advocating (fighting?) will be worth it in the long run. We've seen what happens when one decides to break away and throw hsi hands up. Tell your friend to resist the temptation to leave, as it's too easy ... it's instant gratification. You're right, she may very well be one of the only voices for life there. Her task is great, but God is on her side. And Good always wins over evil.

I'm guessing the "peace and justice" priests never speak of sin and hell, either. Helping the poor is good, but helping others while living an otherwise sinful life isn't going to get us into heaven.

Any chance of the bishop changing anything? I'd inform the bishop and stay for now try to get things to change at the parish. Maybe she could organise some sort of unofficial pro-life parish group, basically the same thing as before but not actually part of the parish.

If the bishop won't do anything and the priests are there to stay, I'd seriously consider finding another parish. If they're out of line with Church teachings, I know it would be a distracton to me at Mass, even more so if there's liturgical abuses going on. Are there other parishioners that feel the same way? Maybe voting with our feet will send the diocese a message that they just won't listen to any other way.

Sancta Maria et omnes Sancti Dei, orate pro Ecclesia et omnibus clericis ejus.
