Parakeets

I have a new companion in my house, a young parakeet.... Sidney.
He will now sit on my finger and I allow him freedom in one room of the house. Anyone else with tips on training parakeets? I have read several books from my local library on training parakeets, but would like some communication with others who are enjoying birds as pets.

I have two parakeets and both of them sit on my finger and come out of the cage . They both have the run of the house when they are out thefemale is the dominent one even though she is younger.It does not take too long to train then but it requires paitence.

Hi! Congrats on your new companion, Starrbyrd! I do parrot rescue, myself, and share my home with 16 large and small parrots, two of whom are Princess of Wales Parakeets, and two are Budgies. I'm head over heals for them all, they're just so easy to get attached to, aren't they?? It's nice to see an owner who actually wants to take that time with their bird, too.

If adopted from a pet shop rather than a breeder or rescue than any tricks such as talking might never come along, but most parakeets, especially Budgies, only learn three things to do with their human, anyway: step-up, talk, and follow that remarkably similar-looking bird in the shiny square... The only tips I would ever give to one of the adopters who come looking at my foster babies are time and an excellent, ballanced diet. Nothing more in-depth at all, they just need that interaction that makes them desire and feel secure in joining this strange new flock they're in, and they need the proper nutrition to keep them in a good mood during what can only be called harrowing times after they are removed from their very first flock.

I didn't train mine at all really. He likes to sit on your finger, but also likes to peck at your finger. Usually if you blow on him, he'll stop. He likes to make noises. If you make noises back to him, he'll get really quite and then answer you when you stop. He doesn't like to get very far from his cage. If you have him out and you move too quickly, he'll fly back to his cage.

Whenever I watch tv and are really into the show my birds will begin to chrip loudly. when there is another bird on tv chriping the birds will join in. it gets fustrating at times.

Hi Starrbyrd and congratulations. Birds are great pets! I have a Quaker Parakeet who's going to be 10 years old in November.

I had a parakeet growing up. Mine was very tame. As with most small pets, you need to spend alot of time handling them. Birds are easy because you can sit and watch TV, etc, and just let him hang out on your finger. One thing I would recommend is having his wings clipped. Some may think this is cruel, but so is a little bird slamming into a wall, or worse, flying outside.

These are my birdies. We trained them by just taking them out and having them sit w/ us. Birdies really like to be talked to.

my sisters got an 11 year old budgie and it swwms that she only trained it to be a guard bird and attack any one that gets near its cage.
