  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The Bible talks about gluttony being a sin and not being good to eat too much honey, but where does it talk about being overweight? How does that fit in? How do you define gluttony? Couldn't you be guilty of gluttony and not be overweight? Such as someone who binges and purges? I'm wondering where weight becomes a sin, i.e., do I need to go on a diet?

Being overweight doesn't fit in, that is into my pants.

Being fat is a result of gluttony (the sin) and the medical problems associated with being fat certainly makes clear why gluttony is forbidden.

Good post!

I am interested in all our WOF folks' answers.

So many WOF have conquered illness.... financial trouble.... and are walking in victory in so many areas.... EXCEPT... their weight. There are wayyyy too many fat, even obese, WOFers.

What holds them back from applying faith in the weight area?

What holds them back from walking in victory and being thin?

Do many just think it doesn't matter?

Being overweight itself may not be a sin - let me explain.

If a person is not gluttonous, and they are doing, have been doing everything they possibly know to do to deal with being overweight, including seeking the Lord over the matter, and they are STILL overweight, I'm confident they are not in sin.

But if they are not treating their body as a temple....(uh-oh, I think I just convicted myself..lol), and are putting any and everything they want into their body - it may not matter if they are overweight or not - they're still in sin!!

I am by no means overweight, but the Lord has been dealing with me about the kinds of foods I eat and how much I eat. It's not a matter of weight, but of self-control (for me). Sigh...still trying to gain victory over sugar .

But where is the line drawn? 5 pounds? 10 pounds? Where is the point that says I am in sin? At one time in history, fat was considered a totally different thing than it is now. Marilyn Monroe was considered great at a size 14. Now, everyone is supposed to be a size 2.

I was very much overweight by about 60 pounds. I tried every conceivable diet I could think of, with no success. I prayed and prayed for God to give me an answer that was not a diet, but something I could live with the rest of my life. I'm not into carrot sticks and celery the rest of my life. After doing a review of the things that I did eat, I found where my downfall was. It's night eating fatty high calorie foods after dinner. So I substituted all the sweets for a bowl of Shredded Wheat at night. Yep sugar in it. Got rid of all soft drinks. And substituted snacking during the day, which comes about when your sugar levels drop, to eating grapes. They have natural sugars, and are a good antioxident, but satisfy that sugar craving. I eat regular meals, because I can't make dietary meals without having other members of the family throwing a fit. LOL..So I eat regular foods at mealtimes. It's been about 9 months since I started, the weight slowly came off, by just eliminating a few things. I have 10 pounds remaining to get off. This is something I can live with, without the feeling of being deprived of good tasting food.

That's an excellent testimony!!

That reminds me how Joyce Meyer started getting her weight under control - the Lord told her to cut out anything that wasn't "necessary," and she lost quite a bit of weight that way!!

Most of us know when we're fat. A good weight scale helps. I don't do sizes. I do height and weight. When in doubt, just ask God if your fat, but don't ask your husband because no matter haow he answers, he can't win.

I'm NOT asking God until I'm ready to hear the truth.

If we want to talk about what is sin or not sin, there is no end. Anything that is not of faith is sin. So let's not go down that road.

Being overweight is just not good for health reasons, whether you're a little over weight or a 100 pounds overweight. Also, our bodies are the temple of God. So we want to glorify God in our bodies too. I could say that same thing about being underweight and malnourished.

I am an Asian. I have heard it said many times that a lot of Americans are overweight. No, most of them don't look like the men and women on Baywatch so I've discovered.

You want to know what we Asians think? We think that you guys just eat a lot. I'm not trying to offend here. I'm just stating what we've noticed. What you have as starters is more than a meal for us. *LOL*

The last time I was in an army canteen on reservist duty, I saw these American sailors having lunch. Each one of them had a litre of coke as their drink, even this really short guy. My litre of coke at home lasts my wife and I about a few weeks. *LOL* Yes, we're smaller, shorter and many of the women here are really slim, esp the younger gen, influenced by pop stars and VJs on MTV.

I agree with you one this one, however when I was in Vietnam I did see a few short Vietnamese who could really put away the rice, and I mean a lot of rice.

Between having lots of rice and lots of coke, I think the former is healthier.

I am not saying Asians are all that healthy when it comes to food, we eat a lot of fried oily stuff, I'm just saying the portions that we generally take it are a lot smaller.

I was in Australia some time ago with my wife. One night, we went to this cafe for dinner.

The waitress asked us what we would like to have. We ordered a plate of pasta each. She looked at us as if to say, "That's all, you cheapskate? No starters, no soups, no desserts?"

I could hardly finish the plate of pasta before me. It was really a mountain full. I got a shock when it came. "My goodness, how am I going to finish all this?"

I had to force feed myself. Even then , I couldn't finish it. My wife wasn't doing any better. She's much smaller than me. *LOL*

No argument about the rice and coke comparison.

One of the biggest drawbacks to some Asian cuisine is the use of cottonseed oil. Please don't put this stuff in your body. It is nearly as bad a hydrogenated fat, maybe even worse.

I think the Mediterranean diet is the best I've seen.

I've seen a lot of starters that were a meal in them selves.

One of these days they will have a coke so big that you will need to use you seatbelt to hold on to it while driving.

For every portion of soda you drink, it takes 35 like siize portions of water to flush all the toxins out of your body.

Gluttony, I believe is referring to a food addiction that leads to excess.

Pro 23:2
(KJV) And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.

(BBE) And put a knife to your throat, if you have a strong desire for food.

(CEV) Don't go and stuff yourself! That would be just the same as cutting your throat.

(GNB) If you have a big appetite, restrain yourself.

You can be skinny as a rail and be a glutton. Gluttony doesnt indicate being overweight, it refers to excess food intake [which can lead to being overweight].

To my knowledge, no binge diet is healthy, but there are good purge diets.

My wife knows alot about that stuff.
