Hi, Purple Hyacinth and Grandma Dolittle,
I am sorry to hear about your battles with depression. You both will be in my prayers.
I am clinical depressed. I try to focus on God and read good positive books; watch positive shows.
Reading positive books especially helps my anxiety, as well. I've loved and found great comfort in books by Max Lucado and Billy Graham since I was in grade school, struggling with severe anxiety.
Also...I think changing my diet helped. I now eat a Paleo diet. No flour, sugar, refined foods. I also started eating a lot of fish, nuts, healthy fats and taking vitamins. I had a very strong "startle reflex" and I read Magnesium helps with anxiety. I take 500 mg. before bed, I don't know if it's working but I am trying to help myself as naturally as I can. I know when I eat sugar, it literally makes me go nuts.
Purple Hyacinth, we seem to have very similar diets... except I'm not quite so good about the flour and sugar...baked goods are my downfall.

I do, however, eat loads of fish, especially salmon (salmon patties are a quick, cheap way to get salmon into your diet), as well as nuts and vitamins. I find cherry extract works well at helping anxiety, and so does Valerian root. (I'll warn you though, Valerian root smells absolutely
awful--In fact, they say the worse the smell, the better the calming affects!) Most people take it as a natural way to help insomnia, but I would take it when I woke up in the morning!
I have recently started taking an anti-depressant that is targeted to help individuals with OCD. I also take anxiety medication in the morning and in the evening, which does wonders for my nerves. When my anxiety is lessened, my coping skills for OCD increase.
Thank you for the prayers, empathy, and advice, Grandma Dolittle and Purple Hyacinth. I so appreciate everything.
Blessings,
Miss Tea
