  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I don't know where I heard this but, "All sin is a black eye unto God". Both the action and spirit bring dishonor and displeasure to God. Since we are children of the Spirit, it is the Spirit that hurts most. Our actions are of the Flesh, and the flesh is of the world, but the spirit is of God. All spiritual sin (all sin is spiritual) hurts equally, in my opinion (I can't say I am prophesying right now;) )

You know, I don't really think of it too much. The way I see it, all sin is deadly. Anything that comes between me and my Father is dangerous, no matter how large or small the sin seems to be. So, I don't make much distinction between venial and mortal sins.

I have a 2fold question really: Is one sin worse than the other, and do the catholic 7 deadly sins have any merit in our circles?
1 corinthians 6.9 sins unto death

proverbs 6.18-24 6 things God hates , 7th he detests ... gossip

yes .... catholic bro's have got more going for them , than
we give them credit for ....

sins of falling , backsliding , failing .... doing battle , oppression , attack
v's sins of flesh ,,,, with little or no effort on our part to resist ...

I'd say that depends on what you mean by "worse." Worse to whom and in what way?

and do the catholic 7 deadly sins have any merit in our circles?
All sin merits death:

Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

This is a universal application to disobedience to God. There is no such thing as only 7 deadly sins. I think, but I could be wrong, that the Catholics think that there are 7 particular sins which destroy the justifying grace of God. It may not be the justifying grace but I think it's some special kind of grace.

God bless

1John 2:15-17 gives us the three "root" sins. all other sins spring from one of these roots.
1 - Lust of the eyes (greed)
2 - Lust of the flesh (imorality)
3 - Pride of life (pride)

You can't have the promised victory over sin until you know what you are fighting. Sin IMHO is not a weighted system.

Thank Jesus for forgivness!

If you are a root cause analysis thinker you can take any sin and place it in one of these roots.

A quick exegetical inquiry:

What is the common non-Catholic Christian understanding of 1 John 5:16-17?

Thanks.

PS: I will not reply further and hope no other Catholic will see this question as an opportunity to push the Catholic understanding into this forum.

A person who lives an unrepentant lifestyle of sin, ie believes that they can do whatever they want and God will forgive them, can lose lose their salvation. Their sin is leading to death.

I don't know that you'll find a "common" Protestant understanding of those verses. However, the reformed view is that those verses most likely refer to a stubborn refusal to accept the message of the Gospel. I would say it's either that or a reference to the unforgivable sin mentioned in Matthew 12:31,32; Mark 3:28-30; and Luke 12:8-10.

I do not believe this has anything to do with a person losing their salvation. But, in all fairness, I don't believe losing our salvation is a possibility.

God bless
