Remember the good ol days of religious tolerance, when Elijah ordered the slaughter of hundreds of prophets of Baal after he won the bull-sacrifice showdown during the drought? Boy I'd love to have been there to see the looks on their faces when everything in the sacrificial area was consumed by fire. poof! not a good day for Baalism. Classic old testament layin down the smack on false prophets action. truly classic. God doesn't seem to be a God of religious tolerance. Love the sinner, hate the sin. Didn't he also call down giant balls of fire from the heavens on someone too? good ol Elijah...

Hilarious Word: "Laying down the smack." Imagine what price this "smack laying" spirit cost him, what sort of a closeness with the Lord gave him such an inheritance...and yet, we of the New Covenant have access to greater things.

To my Smack Laying Brothers;

Deg.

Hello guys,

That section of 1 Kings is actually one of my favorite in all the Bible. I love the boldness that Elijah shows. Eight hundred, nine hundred prophets of another religion, so what? He knew God was with him. Amazing.

I sincerely believe that those kinds of miracles can happen still. I'm not saying that we should go out and call out challenges to everyone we see, but God is the same God he always has been, and "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to-day, and for ever" (HEB 13-8). Maybe we're just not bold enough. I don't doubt the faith in any of us, but when is the last time any of us have been that blatantly pig-headed? I mean, sometimes I have to practically kick myself to even talk to my barber about God, and I've never tried to convert a crowd of 900 :).

We do have access to much greater things than even Elijah, but we have to be willing to sacrifice all, even our silly self-consciousness, to God. If we do that, He will lay the smack down again.

No slaughters though, guys. ;)

yea, we let God lay the smack down in his own way, by his own hand. some people get it wrong and they think God is telling them to lay the smack down themselves, by the flesh.

also, notice Elijah's faith: they are in the middle of a multiyear drought, and he pours TWELVE JARS of water into the trench, undoubtedly a precious commodity. The water also signifies life, and that trench separates the corrupted ground from the holy ground of the sacrifice. Not to mention the faith it took to cover something that you want to BURN with WATER =) =) go God, go God, lay the smack down, oh yeah... wow God is so sovereign and powerful. And I am so weak and stupid. But he loves me anyway. Praise the Lord for mercy and wisdom.
