Well basically a reference book. One that contains some information on every Saint, and has explanations of different practices. I have seen Catholic, Jewish and Islamic encyclopedias before, so I can only hope there is a English written Orthodox one too.Philip said:I am not aware of one. What type of information are you looking for?
nicodemus said:There is The Prologue, a great four volume index of Saints that is arranged according to the Church calendar. When I hit 15 posts, I will post a link to it. Other things you might be interested in is Blackwell Dictionary of Eastern Christianity, a book that has short entries (sometimes just definitions, sometimes longer articles.) It contains stuff about Eastern Catholicism and Oriental Orthodoxy as well as Eastern (Byzantine) Orthodoxy, it's an expensive book (about $90, 575 pages, but has some good info.) There's also The Complete Book of Orthodoxy by George Rube that specifically addresses Eastern Orthodoxy. Rube's book is a bit overpriced ($30 for a 350 page paperback), but it is the only book I've seen anywhere close to what you described.
You can purchase the Prologue from Ochrid from Saint John of Kronstadt Press http://www.sjkp.com/ If you just type in "prologue ochrid" in the search field, it should be the first one to pop up. Apparently, they now have a two volume version that is much cheaper. I have the four volume, super expensive version mentioned in the paragraph on the site. It is a great resource for a church library to have too.Andreas said:Awesome! I just found a few of the book you listed on amazom.com, and I will wait for the link to the first one you listed.
God Bless you.![]()
Let me thumb through them for a couple of days and get back to you. I'd probably lean towards The Complete Book of Orthodoxy solely based on price. While Blackwell Dictionary is more scholarly, it is three times as expensive. Both are reference books, not something most folks would sit down and read straight through. But like I said, let me thumb through them some over the remainder of the weekend and I will get back to you.Andreas said:Nicodemus, I'm hoping to get The Prologue for sure. However, I'm not sure which one I should get between the Blackwell Dictionary of Eastern Christianity and The Complete Book Of Orthodoxy? Which one did you find more useful?
