Hi everyone. Could someone please explain to me how Original Sin is explained by those Christians who are Theistic Evolutionists? I'm kinda confused on this. Thanks!

I'm not sure I understand everything about it, but it basically adds God into the mix of latter day thinkings for evolution (and I say latter day, because traditional evolution theory is swiftly becoming outdated......and unwanted by all). I think it's a fair attempt to try and understand life's history and coordinate it with science so that the two mesh and make sense together. It's basically a marriage of God and science. Like I said, In my opinion it can be considered fair at this point because no one really knows and God is the author of science and the two should jive together somehow. Most traditionalist Christians seem to attack it though, because it throws out the window a shorter time span for creation and a chronological order that has been imprinted in their beliefs by tradition. With theories like "Theistic", God allows nature to take it's course and in it's sweet time. I don't buy into any theories at this point in my life. They tend to change like the wind as knowledge increases and God reveals.............but I do get the gist of what they're saying here.

Hi Holly; original sin means that we are slaves to sin by birth. That is to say our nature is sin: our minds and wills are directed towards sin. We are not sinners by choice, as if we can decide whether we are sinners or not; we are sinners by nature.
That is my explanation of original sin, and I am a "theistic evolutionist".
Why is it you wanted explanations particularly from theistic evolutionists?

I am not a theistic-evolutionist, but concerning "original sin":

1 Cor 15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

Does it say "in Adam all sin"? I didn't read that.

Rom 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

Did it say, "sin passed upon all men"? I didn't read that.

But it does say that all men have sinned. Sin brought about Adam's death. Therefore, when we sin, it brings about our death (Rom. 5:12).

We inherit the wages of sin, which is death (Rom. 6:23), but we sin on our own without any help from Adam whatsoever...and very well I might add!

What have you got against original sin?
I'm not holy rokker, but since I feel the same... I figured I would give my answer to your question.

My problem with "original sin" is that I believe each person is accountable for their life alone. I do not believe that human beings are inherently evil (as you do according to your "totally depraved" title).

I believe that in every circumstance we have the choice of choosing "right" or "wrong"; and for each choice we are accountable.

I have recently come to understand that there is a different meaning for "original sin" within the numerous denominations of Christianity; so my statement above will be counter to the definition of some, but not all.

I don't see that Scripture teaches the doctrine.

RVincent opinion is also a good reflection of my own. To say that we are born sinners or enslaved to sin must be read into the Scriptures.
