Pretty disgusting. The U of O student newspaper, "Emareld" wrote up some disturbing drawings of Jesus during Passion Week of this year degrading our Lord. The part that makes this more than just sick, the student paper receives a portion of their funding from tax dollars. The university President has failed to do anything. I imagine that will be changing now.

This happens all the time, the paper will remain open. My school had racism and anti-Semitism, it's nothing new. Every year somewhere, a school publication puts out articles and images meant to push the limits of decency. Every year someone wants to protest these papers, Bill O'Reilly is just trying to get publicity (whata blowhard), I didn't see him complaining about my school paper when they put out salacious images (not that I cared in the first place).

It's free speech, it's part of the activity fee for the school, your tax dollars aren't going to the publication. Moreover, if people want to change the content, then they need to join the group and change the direction of the organization. You can't close down a publication at a school when it's not violating any school policies, plus they have their right to free speech.

My message: ignore it because now everyone knows about the paper, which will just get them more buzz. Yesterday you didn't even know about them, so I take this as O'Reilly's feigned outrage.

Just remember, as the New York Times tells us, the war on Christianity is all in our heads.
Yes, the long war on Christianity. I pray that one day we may live in an America where Christians can worship freely! In broad daylight! Openly wearing the symbols of their religion.... perhaps around their necks? And maybe - dare I dream it? - maybe one day there can be an openly Christian President. Or, perhaps, 43 of them. Consecutively. - Jon Stewart

Free speech and free press.

This is not persecution. To equate it with such is neither honest nor respectful to the memories of our martyrs.

Professing Christians are the majority in the USA. If you think there is a war on Christianity here you should try being a member of a minority religion sometime. There is no comparison.

Out of curiosity, what did you think about the Muslim reaction to the Dutch comics satirizing Mohammed?

I found both ridiculous, how about yourself? Let me sum this up for some of those here that didn't quite get it. The Oregon University student newspaper is partially funded by public tax dollars. This means that there are liabilities for publishing hate speech, where a privately funded newspaper such as the independent newspaper our athiest guest brought up is protected under freedom of speech (in our country). To the Christian poster that stated these attacks go on all the time, so that makes it ok?

Your Lord, perhaps, but apparantly not theirs.

I get it so far...

Hate speech? You said these attacks were disturbing drawing of Jesus Christ. If he is offended by them, he has as much right as anyone else to sue for libel and/or defamation of character.

So... where's the problem?

You mean the ones that most of our media refused to reprint?

What sort of tax payer money doe the Emerald get? And how is this not constitutionaly protected free speach? It is amazing hypocritical that the very same conservatives who a get all riled up about hate speech laws protecting homosexuals from nasty comments get soooo upset when someone turns around and says nasty things about their "lifestyle".

Hate speech? Does that phrase now mean anything that anyone finds offensive? Or just what some Christians find offensive?

I don't think that getting tax dollars means the gov't suddenly gets prior restraint rights on their speech.

Ironic- the University president is a republican and former State Attorney General.
Also, this is Oregon, one of the least religious states in the Union- this would cause as much of an uproar on the UofO campus as an "attack" on Zeus- it's just another mythical character to most of the students.
