  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm new here but I had came across a post and I was wondering how could a person be a Lutheran and a catholic at the same time? Didn't Martin Luther's fight began with the catholic church when he stated that the just shall live by faith?

Reda,

The word catholic literally means "universal", and orthodox means right, and correct. These words do describe confessional Lutheranism.

When we look at different doctrines in the light of Scripture, confessional Lutherans are more "catholic" than Rome, and more "orthodox" than Antioch.

Luther's fight was against errors in the visible Church. Remember, the Invisible Church is made up of all believers, and only believers in Christ, those living, those who have died and are in heaven, and shall be added to by all who will come to faith, both those now living who will convert, and those yet to be born.

Luther's concern was that the "visible Church" be brought back in line with the "Invisible" one.

It is the Invisible Church that we confess when we say in the Creed; "I believe in the Holy catholic Church, the Communion of the Saints..." and "I believe in one Holy catholic and Apostolic Church...".
