I love opera! I sing opera! In my younger days, I was a soprano, but my voice has always been on the richer side, and has deepened with age... although I can still hit the top C's, I am far more of a mezzo these days! Thank you so much for all the links! So wonderful to be able to share this passion! :)

I didn't know how a spinto voice sounded until I bought Aprille Millo's first CD. A spinto soprano voice is partly lyric and partly dramatic if I remember my jargon.

You are absolutely right :) I have been described as a "lirico spinto"... It essentially means that the voice has both lyrical and dramatic capabilities. A singing teacher of mine (as a teen) described my voice this way as she said I had "the rich tone of a dramatic mezzo, and the softness and range of a lyrical soprano". It is a wonderful gift to have, and allows for a wide and diverse repertoire. :)

PrudenceAnn, thank you. You've just made my day, my friend. You sound like the expert for me to learn from. I can't sing a note, but I read Oxford University Press's Opera Quarterly an Opera News. I can hardly wait to take your master class. :)

Lately, I've been ignoring my musical passion, opera, because I've felt depressed for months. Then you cheered me up just now. Thanks for reviving my enthusiasm.

Wonderful, there's another opera buff here on the board. My speaking voice is probably bass baritone or at least baritone. But I wish it would change enough to convince me to return to radio school, where I studied because other people told me that my voice belonged on the air. For now, I still think, "My voice on the radio? You're crazy, folks."

Years ago, after an acquaintance of mine passed away, I attended his wake. Trying to be as sympathetic as I knew how to be, I walked up to his widow, introduced myself, expressed my sorry, and heard her reply that her husband thought I had, in her words, "an obscene voice." That left me speechless.

Verdi and Donizetti are my favorites.

BTW: To me, some American musical theater is every bit as profound as opera. Like this classic piece (overlooking the political incorrectness. And the 70s hair. ;)) Sam Ramey is an awesome bass-baritone, and this performance is incredible.

While searching about opera music, I had found the fact that
Opera composers would sometimes hire a group of people to cheer their works or boo the works of their rivals. This group was called a claque (clapping) and was common at European opera performances.
