  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I read about it as a non medication form of pain relief. I decided I didn't think it would work for me. The whole idea of it just seems like I'd think it's a load of hooey.

If you like it, all the power to you. I know some women who use it and love it but it depends on the mom and her personality.

Yeah, the "hypno" part is what has kept me from seriously looking into it before now, but after reading the first part of the book it doesn't seem as weird. I was just wondering if the classes would be worth it or if reading the book will be enough. Maybe once I've finished reading the book I will have answered my own question...

Yeah, I did really like the Bradley class I took and feel like I learned a lot from it. The only thing I didn't like about Bradley is that I feel like they could give a little more info about getting mentally prepared for birth...they focus heavily on training yourself to physically relax, but it's hard to physically relax if you can't also get your mind relaxed. So that's why I'm looking into the HypnoBirthing.

I did hypnobirthing. I didn't take a class, but I used the CD with the book every day the last trimester, and the Rainbow Relaxation CD (purchased through the Hypnobirthing Institute) every day during the last month.

I think promising women a pain-free birth is a bunch of garbage. I brought my headphones to the delivery room so that I could listen to the CDs in labor, but I threw my headphones across the room after about 10 minutes, because it was too distracting, and I just needed to be fully focused to cope with the pain. In early labor, I found the HB breathing techniques helpful, but when active labor set in, I had to start from scratch and invent my own breathing.

I did have a drug-free birth. And the CDs were pretty helpful early on to brainwash me into just accepting whatever labor threw at me. I've heard labor and delivery nurses say that they don't really notice any difference between their Bradley moms and their HB moms.

I hope this helped!

That was helpful, thanks. :) I do think the whole "pain-free" thing is a bit unrealistic...I just feel like learning multiple ways of coping will help me do what works best for me at the time. I don't think I'll take the class though. Since I've already taken the Bradley class I don't know that it would really be worth it to me. I will finish reading the book and practice relaxation though.
