Churches in Niger Attacked Over Charlie Hebdo Cartoons

While the debate over the freedom of speech following the Charlie Hebdo incident in France earlier this month continued, protests over their latest cartoon depiction of a weeping Prophet Mohammed holding a sign saying, “I am Charlie,” led to violence in the West African nation of Niger. The violence that started in the country’s second city, Zinder, quickly spread to surrounding villages and finally to the capital Niamey.

Charges Against Bhutan Pastor Dropped

At 3:19 a.m. on January 19th, Open Doors received a text message from Bhutanese Pastor Tandin Wangyal, “Praise the Lord! God answered our prayers. A million thanks for your prayer support!” Although Open Doors is waiting for clarification on whether all the charges were dropped, we are rejoicing with him.

Converted more than twenty years ago, Djamila lived the early years after conversion to Christ under pressure from her Muslim parents. Djamila only found full freedom to live out her Christian faith once she was married to a man who shares her faith. She currently serves her Lord alongside her husband in a local church in northern Algeria.
