Open conversion to Christianity still not possible in Egypt

Rome, Apr. 20, 2006 (CNA) - A report by the EFE news agency states that despite the Egyptian government’s recent decision to allow missionaries of “all monotheistic religions” to be active in the country, conversions to Christianity continue to take place clandestinely.

The report noted the case of Mary Tanagho, a 20 year-old Egyptian Christian whose family has lived in the US for 24 years because of death threats against her father for distributing Christian pamphlets “intended for Muslim faithful.”

“The police stormed the clinic where my father was working in Cairo and they took him to jail, where he spent six months without being accused of a single crime,” Mary said. She said the pamphlets led to the conversion to Christianity of various Muslims.

Will ever be open conversion possible in Egypt? I see Egypt as an fundamental muslim country. They don't want other faith here, other religion. But still it's not as bad there as in Saudi Arabia.

It's their choice not to allow open conversion, but well we all know it's kind of bad choice.

Actually I was thinking that most Muslims in Egypt are more moderate or maybe just conservatives. I don't think they have many fundamentalist Muslims over there but I'm honestly not certain so I may be wrong.

I have also heard that converting is dangerous in Egypt.. there are a lot of stories of former muslims being killed or escaping.

The last years 1300 peoples, who converted from islam to christianity, has been killed in Egypt.

And the number is much higher if you count the rest of the islamic world (1,2 billion people), or the communist countries, or even hinduists and buddhist countries.

300 000 000, christians are persecuted or discriminated against in the world today - just for being christians.

And the countries involved in these unjust acts are not only muslim. In addition to practically the whole islamic world ("moderate" countries like Turkey included), there are persecuted christians in most of Asia, maybe except South Korea and Japan. Also, The Philipines and Taiwan etc. are not so bad. India is really bad. In several countries in Africa south of the Sahara, cases of percecution also exist, but in a much lesser degree and at a local level. In Latin America, Cuba, Mexico and Colombia have a lot percecution. In Europe Byelarus is bad, as well as Russia, Albania and Bosnia. Other countries where persecution is rising is France, Britain and Sweden.

I think that laws restricting conversion or "apostasy" (from Islam that is) is pretty common in the Muslim world regardless of whether the Muslims are moderate, conservative, fundamentalist, liberal, or even secular.
