My mom just had a local in the birth canal with my sister and me. Like I said, I don't know whether that is an option or not until I talk to the doctor tomorrow. It was, but I don't know if it still is. I am just hoping that I can do something effective OTHER than an epidural. I am so afraid of landing one of those spinal headaches it is ridiculous. Plus, I don't know how comfortable I am with people being around my spine....

that's the same as me. I'm not ruling anything else but i'd rather do it as natural as possible with the back up there if needed.

I've also heard that with the epidural you don't have to sensation to push so it's harder

...and makes the actual labor last longer? Of course, it woulnd't matter too terrible much since you wouldn't feel it. There are pros and cons to each side an everyone says it is my choice, but I don't know what choice to make!!! :sigh:

epidurals do slow down labor...very much so, I still felt like pushing with mine, but after it wore off the urge to push was much stronger..so it does kinda cut back the sensations pretty much everywhere below your abdomen lol...I wanted to move my legs so bad.

It is by no means pain free- but just the simple fact of refusing to be flat on your back for any part of your labor drastically and I mean DRASTICALLY reduces the pain. If you can spend part of your labor in water  That really helps- most hopsitals have a tub or a shower you can be in while you labor- it really helps a lot.

The other thing too is psychological preparation for labor...knowing that during transition you are likely to feel like you can't do it...you are likely to feel overwhelmed and weepy---and if you can recognize it for transition---you can keep telling yourself that means you are so, so close to beginning to feel like pushing and really, really close to meeting your baby. Also just the idea that every contraction will be over in 90 seconds or so...that you can endure almost anything if will only last 90 seconds....

For me labor is almosy entirely mental- getting through one contraction at a time- recognizing the signs of transition- and crowning...really being aware if my shoulders or my mouth are tense--which means that I am pulling away from the pain...rather than breathing down into it to let my cervix open up. I play all kinds of mental games with myself-- I keep telling myself by this time tomorrow I'll be holding my baby in my arms....and try to imagine what he'll look like....I always try to reach down and feel the head while they're crowning --it makes it really real that this all because there's a BABY!

Again- it's by no means pain free...but it is also, for most women- a very different kind of pain that any they have experienced before.

Epidurals can be great- especially in cases where a woman really is exhausted or really can't cope with the pain. They can really help when a woman would otherwise become totally exhausted. But once that epidural needle goes in--- there is a whole snowball effect of things that are going to happen now. Your labor will very likely slow down. You will be confined to bed. You will have constant fetal monitoring. You will be given a catheter- since you can't get up to pee. You are more likely to have maternal fever- because you cannot dissipate the energy from your labor--possibly resulting antibiotics given to the baby after birth in the NICU. Because your labor has slowed- you are very likely to be given pitocin to get your labor going again- which gives unnaturally strong and long contractions- thus increasing the chances for fetal distress. With fetal distress you are far more likely to have an instument delivery or a c-section....both of which carry far higher maternal morbidity and mortality rates than an unassisted vaginal delivery.

I totally believe that each woman knows her body and her capabilities best of anyone at all. I think if a woman makes the informed choice that an epidural is best for her and her baby- that is wonderful- and can help her to have a great birth. However- I think it really, really needs to be a truly informed decision--where a woman has looked at the pros and cons--the dangers and the benefits --and makes a choice within those parameters.

I have looked at the pros and cons and if I look at it in that aspect, the cons DEFINITELY outweigh the pros....but I also know I have a very VERY minimal pain threshold and that really concerns me. IDK....we shall see.

there are other pain medications they can give you if you chose to have one, I'm not sure about the effects of it on the labor because I didn't have those, but I know there are different ones other than a Spinal or an Epidural.

Just a sort of funny anecdote-- my mom has said to me more than twice..."Oh Shan- I admire you-- I could never give birth naturally..." to which I replied "But you did mom, with me.....remember!???" She had me naturally because of how her labor panned out (it was the middle of the night at a rural hospital, and they couldn't find an enterance that was unlocked, and finally she said that before they did anything to her she HAD to go to the bathroom- guess where I was almost born :) )- but she still thinks she could never have a baby naturally :) It cracks me up :D

I am not going to sugar coat it --it hurts---but you are also specifically made to do this--and all your hormones help out and it is not like other pain which is constant. Also labor pain often does not come on all at once--but starts gradually- giving you time to adjust. To me the big thing in labor is to just not be afraid of the pain---to know that this is exactly what your body is supposed to be doing, you know?? And that it will end and will be over. Other pain is not like that...

Now if you have to be induced all bets are off- because those contractions are crazy!!:swoon:

I second that! I was having those kind of contractions at 8cm when my epidural wore off...my mom has been induced with 2 kids and had one natually and she said that the contractions she had with me (not being induced) wasn't near as bad as the ones she has when she was induced..I have nothing to compare them too..but they were really bad.:o

Yeah, I would love to think I am strong enough to do it naturally and I am really hoping that I go in with that mindset. I have a couple of weeks to pump myself up for it. I really intend to go into it med-free with something on standby. I just don't know how long I will allow it to standby.....LOL

If I have to be induced...then yeah, ALL bets are off! Gimme mah meds!!!!

I don't really view it as a "strong enough" kind of thing---but rather a "being really okay with being weak" kind of thing. :D

My mantra " My power is made perfect in weakness"...

All I ever hear is how it helps to be prepared... like taking a natural birth class, reading a natural birth book.... something that helps you know what to expect... I think you're low on time so if you only have time for one chapter in one book I really like "Emotional Signposts in Labor" in Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way.... you don't even have to do the Bradley way to get something out of that chapter  Maybe you can go peek at a bookstore or library?

Thanks! That is great! I will have hubby go by the bookstore today and see if we can find it. We are bringing the Gilmore Girls series for me to watch (Thanks Linnis!) so I know that will distract me, especially since I missed that entire season!!! Other than that, I really think the book will help. I am just nervous because I don't find out til the 21 how big he is, etc....and the dr. says I can have him anytime after the 16th. I just pray for no complications if he decides to come early.

You know I have a friend who recently gave birth to a 9 pound something ounce baby completely naturally and she didn't have a problem. :) Well, I mean, I'm sure it wasn't a picnic as labor is hard work.... but big babies don't scare me. All I need to do is get that head out and the rest will slither by. There's a word picture for you.... lol.

Another thing I will add, stay home as long as you can and watch the Gilmore Girls there without them poking at you. We went to the hospital too soon with my son and it was just distracting. I wished I had stayed home to watch a movie or osmething.

Yeah, I am just hoping that he doesn't decide to make his appearance while we are out of town the few days before Christmas! It is only a 40 minute drive back to the hospital but it would be so crazy!

The idea of having a baby period petrifies me. If I had it my way, they would just do a c-section. I know everyone would probably TOTALLY disagree...but that is just how I feel.

The goal is not to have any medication. That is one of the many reasons we've chosen to birth at home. Nobody will offer me medication and tempt me to say yes because at the hospital I would likely give in and take them.
