I am currently creating a website which i am thinking about selling products on, I have looked at using the paypal shopping basket for these sales.

Has any one ever used this on a site or any other alternatives?

I've heard thigns from both sides, some say paypal sucks, some say it's just fine.

In a strictly business sense (and assuming paypal will give you no trouble), if you are selling more than a few items, PayPal may be a nice option, but that's all it should be, an option. If you intend to sell more than a few things and plan on doing halfway decent sales, you need to be able to have the site accept credit cards. Not everyone will have PayPal and many people will shy away from buying a product if they have to go unnecessary steps to buy it.

There are multiple ways of getting your site to accept credit cards. If you plan on having a halfway decent volume of sales (over a few hundred dollars a month) you may want to invest in your own merchant account. Merchant accounts can tend to be pricey, so alternately, there are other third party vendors that you can go through without having a merchant account. Obviously each of them are going to charge you something, you just have to look at it and figure out what is the best option for you.

This site gives information on how to accept credit card payments on a website, with a list of third-party vendors so you don't need a merchant account:

good link trunks2k, thanks...

I was going to mention, not knowing what is/was being sold, for you to think of any software that you may have purcased online. Who handled the credit card transaction for the vendor? The link that trunks2k provided seems to cover most I've seen.

Paypal was an answer to pray for me. I was selling on Ebay and there was no way to take email payments back then. People had to send us a payment by snail mail. Sometimes it would take two or three weeks for the postal system to get their payment to us.

If you think there is some sort of a problem with Paypal, then you should compare it to having to deal with the pony express postal system and the 100 year old check writing system that the banks use.
