  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was wondering how many of you take classes online and how many of you actually sit in a classroom? Which one do you think is better? Easy? I am thinking of taking classes during the summer and some during during the spring. I am still in high school but where I live at a certain age if you would like you could start college while in high school which is what I am thinking about doing.

Thanks for taking the time to stop by and reply

BTW, my major would be accounting and my minor would be businness administration.

As someone who also did dual enrollment in highschool, I recommend taking your first course or two in a traditional classroom. That way, you get used to the college enviroment, which is very different from highschool. You also meet other students, get to talk to your professor face to face, and you can get answers right away.
I've never taken a totally online class, but I have taken what we called "Web enhanced" classes. That's where we go to class for lecture every week, but do most or all of our assignments and some tests online. I really liked doing it that way.

You need to be really disciplined to succeed at online courses. That's not to say you don't in traditional classes, but with online classes you really do. All the material is given via the web. You have very few, if any lectures (it depends on the instructor). You have to do the reading on your own and depend on the instructor to answer your questions promptly which, being academics, they won't always do. In short, you can't really miss any reading assignment, whether on the web or in the books.

In the traditional classroom setting, if you don't understand what you're reading you can wait till class and ask the question either before, during, or after class (the last 2 mostly) and/or listen to the lecture to get clarification and then head back to the book. You really can't in an online class.

The advantage to online classwork is that if you work you can decide (with limitations) when you'll read the material, ask questions, etc. It's almost entirely self-paced (in the program I'm in, the instructor can require web-based class meetings where everyone logs in at a prearranged time).

I'm not sure which I prefer as both have their advantages and disadvantages. Frankly, because of all the problems that can happen with computers and servers, in-person classes might be better: at least that way, you'll know the instructor received the assignment, test.

I've taken many classes online and many classes offline. Online classes are more convenient (in the sense that you can save on gas money and choose when to take tests and such). However, if you are not self disciplined, online classes will be difficult. There is a lot of busy work in online classes and you have to teach yourself most of the material. One good thing is that because there is a lot of busy work, there are many opportunities for grades. A lot of the classes I took online did have specific due dates for all assignments and tests, so while you may be able to take a test at 2am if you want to, you have to take it before a specific time on a specific date or you will get a 0.

In on-campus classrooms, a lot of the time you just have 3-4 exams and a paper and those are the only opportunities for grades that you will get. If you want an "A" you better get A's on everything. Also, if you take on-campus classes, treat your class like a wedding: show up on time, turn off your cell phone, don't leave early, etc.

I have made straight A's in online and offline classes, but I really like taking on-campus classes better because I enjoy being around people. I also feel like I am learning more in on-campus classes.

On the other hand, I am thankful that I took online classes because they taught me to be self disciplined and to have good time management skills.

I take both online and in class. Both are fine for different reasons. I usually take them in class rather than online though. But sometimes it is best to take them online if the school is so far away that the commute gets tiring.
Some classes were I felt that I would learn more in class were history, music, anatomy, math, etc. English classes could be fine online since it is many times mainly writing or reading involved.
Probably any of them would be fine online but it depends on how you learn best. From a teacher or by reading text books on your own.

Oh yeah... taking any sort of math as an online course is just not a great idea. I did take a hybrid course for College Algrebra where I went to class but did quizzes and homework online. They had some pretty neat software that would help you learn what you were doing wrong and help you practice for tests. I also took one Biology class online and that was really different. There was a lot of neat software used for that class, too. However, I took other biology courses on campus where we could use the microscopes and such -- I got a lot more out of that, IMO.

I'm taking both online and in-class, and I much prefer the online classes because I feel that they're both in depth. In class, there are constant distractions: cell phones, talking, nonverbal cues, people coming in late, etc. I also feel that online classes cause you to think more because each student is forced to participate.

I've never taken an online course. I prefer the classroom though

If you've never taken an online class, you can't really say which you'd prefer. That's like saying "I've never had ketchup, but I like mustard much better."

I'll rephrase that then. I've never taken an online course but I like being in the classroom.

I take online courses myself and and I really like it so far. You have to be dedicated to it, but if you like to work at your own pace you'll love it.

Eh, they both have their pros and cons. So far, I have taken 3 online classes at my college, and I'm taking 2 more this semester. I don't think that the online classes are any more or less of a hassle than the in-person classes.

It depends on the major one is taking. I wouldnt advice a pre-med , engeering student to take online courses.... Online courses are for those who want easy grade...kinda like for a short term ......

Yeah I choose not to take any of my major classes (which is history) online because I learn better in class. But for general education I need an don't feel as much of a need to go to class and just want an easy A, then online works pretty good. I really enjoyed taking Family Nutrition online it was very interesting and very easy. Because the text book was that way. I learned alot. Though I visited that same class with a friend a bunch of times and it wasn't that much different as taking it online. The difference was the teacher talked more and there was less need to read the book. I think the online class was an easier A for me than it would have been if I had to sit through a lecture every week. (my online nutrition class was a short term class)
