  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

The two best rated online vendors for camera equipement are B&H Photo and video (www.bhphotovideo.com) and Adorama (www.adorama.com). Samy's camera in LA, CA is pretty good, as are some of the Amazon vendors. Watch for bait and switch tactics with anyone other than the three I've mentioned above!

For large purchases like that, I always go around on the web and find the lowest prices I can find. Then I go up the list looking for the first 'apparently' reputable site. If a site has broken links, look like it was put together by my preteen brother, or offers rediculously low prices, I avoid it. Often there are multiple versions of a camera (like USA vs Europe) and I make sure that there are enough details about their items that they're not just trying to pass a similar item for a lower price. I also look for a "no questions asked" return policy for at least a couple of weeks.

Another essential way to check up on a company is to contact them directly by phone. Ask for their street address and about their return policy and perhaps about the actual product. They should at LEAST have an address and know the policy listed on the net. If I can't contact them by phone, and they don't post an address on the internet, I eliminate them as a possibility immediately.

Finally, ALWAYS pay online with a credit card. No checking card or debit card etc offers the protection a credit card does -- if anything goes wrong, it may take a few months, but you WILL be able to get your money back if you dispute the charges by the card company's rules (in writing within 90 days etc... is standard).

Anyway, that's just my little lecture on buying online. Generally the large stores will always be safest, but I saved at least $250 on my $900 camera this summer by shopping around (part of that was a $150 manufacturer's rebate). I didn't take the lowest price I could find, but I am still VERY happy with my purchase, and I had no problems with the company I bought it from though it was some obscure shop on the east coast. If it'd been only $50 or less, I'd probably have invested the small additional cash in the assurance of a good transaction.

I would like to add that ebay is always a good option. I haven't bought a digital camera from there, but I bought a $350 Nikon N80 SLR camera, but it only cost me $170 plus the shipping. The camera was new in the box!!! So ebay is always a good option if you feel comfortable with the seller. I try to check up on the feedback if they have any negative comments. Also, I don't like to buy items with descriptions that are horribly misspelled, or that say "item pictured is not item for sale." But I have been shopping on ebay for over a year now, both for $5 purchases and $250 purchases, and I've never felt cheated by anyone!!
