I know there are a lot of U2 fans out there so perhaps one of you could answer this question for me?

I read today that one of U2's songs refers to One Tree Hill (this is a hill in a park in Auckland in New Zealand, which has, or more correctly had one tree, in case anyone is wondering :p ).

I was wondering if anyone could tell what particular song refers to this hill?

i think the song is called "one tree hill" off of the "joshua tree" album. I could be wrong. Just wait for axvers responce for confirmation.

Note of interest: A show on the WB called "one tree hill" was named after that song,or at leat that is what I heard

The song itself is titled One Tree Hill, it is track nine on The Joshua Tree album. Want to know the story behind it? Well, this is taken from a post by myself deep in the U2 fan thread ...

U2 began 1984-85's Unforgettable Fire tour in New Zealand (best performance ever of Pride (In The Name Of Love) was in Wellington, 31 August 1984), and there they met Greg Carroll, who was part Maori. He became a roadie for and close friend of the band, and Bono admired him for his committed and dedicated work ethic. However, in Dublin in 1986, he was out on Bono's motorbike, running an errand on a rainy night when someone ran a red light and hit and killed him. U2 went to his funeral in Wanganui and played there, and furthermore, Bono wrote One Tree Hill - some of the lyrics hark to Maori ritual and beliefs.

U2 was also going to start the Joshua Tree tour in New Zealand in memory of Greg Carroll, but they simply ran out of time and were forced to begin their tour in the USA instead. For that reason, they held the Lovetown tour in 1989 which spent most of its time in Australia and NZ.

The 26 December 1989, Dublin performance is awe-inspiring, moving, and incredible. It's such a shame it hasn't been released officially.

I agree, one tree hill sounds incredible in that show!

I just finished downloading all the Dublin shows in SHN and the sound quality is brilliant. I love the intro of streets on the nye show .

You got them all in SHN? Awesome! I have mp3-sourced copies of three of them, I need to get the 27th. I agree about the Streets intro on NYE! It's amazing! Have you heard 18 December 1989, Amsterdam? Bono snippets In God's Country at the start, it's so awesome. And the 30th December playing of 11 O'clock Tick Tock is really cool to hear.

Yes, and yes i have the Amsterdam show, i just listened to streets then. The Castle Hall japan show is pretty good quality which is now available in SHN. Once I've finished the dvd i started about a week ago, I'll start this SHN. Another good one is the final Rotterdam show. I also have the Melbourne show and he sings Hawkmoon at the start of streets. I'm starting to run out of hardrive space hehe, I'll have to invest in another hardrive :)

Well I have another question then, can someone supply me with the lyrics? :p
We turn away to face the cold, enduring chill
As the day begs the night for mercy love
The sun so bright it leaves no shadows
Only scars carved into stone
On the face of earth
The moon is up and over One Tree Hill
We see the sun go down in your eyes

You run like river, on like a sea
You run like a river runs to the sea

And in the world a heart of darkness
A fire zone
Where poets speak their heart
Then bleed for it
Jara sang, his song a weapon
In the hands of love
You know his blood still cries
From the ground

It runs like a river runs to the sea
It runs like a river to the sea

I don't believe in painted roses
Or bleeding hearts
While bullets rape the night of the merciful
I'll see you again
When the stars fall from the sky
And the moon has turned red
Over One Tree Hill

We run like a river
Run to the sea
We run like a river to the sea
And when it's raining
Raining hard
That's when the rain will
Break my heart

Raining...raining in the heart
Raining in your heart
Raining...raining to your heart
Raining, raining...raining
Raining to your heart
Raining...raining in your heart
Raining in your heart..
To the sea

Oh great ocean
Oh great sea
Run to the ocean
Run to the sea

Man...The Joshua Tree is such an amazing album. I've never really got totally into their other albums...just never had the time or money.

I haven't heard much of their live stuff...but there's an awesome version of Where the Streets Have No Name the performed on New Year's Even 1989/1990 right at the stroke of midnight...always gives me goosebumps.

Oh yeah...I didn't see you already mentioned NYE. I have heard their last album...it's good. I kinda got U2 overload a couple years ago. My roommate my senior year of college was obsessed and would seriously listen to them non-stop every day. I'm just now getting to the point where I can listen to them again.

I would LOVE a room-mate like that if I ever have to live with someone during university. I've been listening to U2 almost non-stop for the last year. The longest break was a week, and that was a challenge from a friend (he went without Linkin Park for a week and I went without U2 ... he coped a lot better than I did!). I spent an hour or two listening to some songs by the NZ band Pacifier last night and that is seriously the longest I've listened to a band other than U2 for MONTHS. Sooo many good bootlegs to listen to, so little time.

Right, so now everyone's afraid of me. That's alright. It's alright, it's alright, it's alright, Axver [something]s in mysterious [something else]s. Yeah, that parody died.

Seems we differ here. Whenever I rank U2's albums, it comes last (even after the Wide Awake In America four-track EP). But then again, I'm a "pre-ZooTV elitist" or something. I would be a pre-JT elitist if it weren't for Bono's AWESOME vocal efforts on the JT and Lovetown tours.

Though I still haven't heard a better version of streets than from the 2nd Please single.
And I still say 18 December 1989, Amsterdam is the best, hehe.

I'm listening to the final Rotterdam show now, it's really good. Though I'd love to know what he says at the start of Streets. He did Hawkmoon at the start once? Awesome! I've got that much U2 on my machine that it's slowing it down majorly, so I'm going to be burning it onto CD. I think it's going to take 60+ CDs! I'll just leave my favourite shows on there. I might start to make a rule that once I've downloaded something, it stays on for a week for me to listen to and then goes onto CD.

Coolness! I went to One Tree Hill when I was six (1993), but sadly wasn't a U2 fanatic then!

I've always loved this song. I remember listening to it over and over when Joshua Tree came out. The lyrics impressed me so much that I scratched them on my desk in study hall.

And a little something off-topic since I seem to be in a sentimental mood: In high school I had a secret admirer (apparently a fellow U2 fan) write me a letter using only titles of U2 songs.
