On The Run
Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me. But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. - Jonah 1:1-3a.
Jonah was on the run because he had heard Gods call but chose to turn and run away. He knew exactly what he was running away from. Jonah did not want to go to Nineveh and preach to those wicked people. So, instead Jonah tried to run away. We know the story and how eventually Jonah decided preaching to the Ninevites was a better deal than being in the belly of the great fish.
Robert Garside is on the run too and he plans to keep on running until he has run across every continent. Garside, known as the Runningman, is from Britain and he is projected to finish his 42,000-mile, five-year journey some time next year. He has run about 30,000 miles across Europe, Australia, Asia and Latin America since leaving England in December of 1996. Along the way he has dodged bullets in Russia, been jailed in China for running in a restricted area, and he had to outrun bandits in Panama and Mexico. You have to wonder if Garside ever watched the movie, Forrest Gump?
Garsides five-year run is a picture of the life of many Christians. We are on the run! Where are we running? What are we running from? Some are just like Jonah and are actually running away from Gods call. God has a plan, a call, a purpose for every child of God but we can only know that plan by putting God first in our lives (Matthew 6:33). We can only live that plan by denying ourselves and taking up our cross each day (Luke 9:23).
You know that God is speaking to your heart. You know God has a plan for your life. Stop running and listen. Listen for the still, small voice to speak. Allow yourself to experience the abundant life. As Jesus said to Martha, ...you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her (Luke 10:41-42).
If you have been on the run - stop running away from God and run to Him. Choose the good part!
