  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It started in January, 1959, and was called The Winter Dance Party Tour. The stars of the tour were Frank Sardo, Ritchie Valens, The Big Bopper, Dion and the Belmonts, and, of course, Buddy Holly.

The tour was a disaster from the very beginning. Extreme cold (-0s), a bus with no heat, and small venues. So it was that Buddy decided to charter a plan to get them to the next tour site. Shortly before 1am on Feb 3, 1949, the plane took off (with Buddy, Ritchie, and Bopper) into a snowstorm. The pilot, Roger Peterson, was not experienced with instrument flying-something that would have be crucial with the weather conditions.

Only eight minutes later, the plane slammed into the ground, apparently at full speed. Investigation found that the pilot most like lost his bearings in the snow, and thought he was climbing. All aboard were killed instantly.

The tour did go on, but that is for discussion after we dedicate, for the next few posts anyway, this thread to the music of these three men. (Note that some of the following links have been previously posted, but will be posted again as we remember The Day The Music Died)

Let's start with Jiles Perry Richardson, better known by his stage name, The Big Bopper. He was born in 1930 in Sabine Pass, Tx.

His best known song is, of course, Chantilly Lace

But yes, he did have other songs. Here is White Lighning (just click on the Song title)

These were the only 2 I was able to find on line. Too bad, for he had other great ones like The Big Boppers Wedding. If anyone knows of where more BB songs might be, please post!

Great trivia here! Here is Running Bear by Johnny Preston.

Ok-now you ask-why this song in the middle of a discussion of the day the music died? Well, listen to the Indian chants. This song was recorded in Oct, 1958, and there three men singing the chants. The first was a man named Bill Hall (don't know anything about him). But the other 2! One was George Jones--yes, THAT George Jones; and the other, as I am sure you have guessed, is the Big Bopper, who also wrote the song!

Next, let's go to the youngest of the 3, Richard Steven Valenzeula, aka Ritchie Valens. He was born in California, on May 13, 1941. In a career that was so short, had some great songs!

Unfortunately, I have been unable to find one of his better known hits, La Bamba. The are a lot of clips of the song from the movie, but cannot find it as done by Ritchie.

Here is his Oh Donna. The song reached #2 just after his death.

Here is a lesser known song, Oh, My Head

After the Crests, Johnny went on to a short solo stint. Then, in the late 60's, he formed a new group, and what great music once more! Here he is with The Brooklyn Bridge singing The Worst That Could Happen.
