Sounds totally sane to me, but then again I'm a nut. You would love the museums up here.
I have had plenty of evangelicals and fundamentalists try to tell me that.
Aren't there icons of the Virgin praying in the "orans" style found in catecombs dating from the late 2nd / early 3rd c.?
I pretty sure archeology has confirmed icons being just about as old as the church. It isn't that far fetched to say that, if we have icons in catacombs in the late 2nd / early 3rd c., what's to say there weren't ones significantly earlier...
I'm just glad that I'm not nuts. That sounds weird to me.
that's pretty much what i did for my whole Renaissance art semesterOne of my favorite things to do in an art museum is to look at Romanesque paintings of the Theotokos and debate whether it is still an icon or not.
Michael, what are you looking for or what is revealed to you from studying the grain of the wood?
There is an incredible beauty to the grain pattern of wood. I turn wood on a lathe and am always in awe of the grain pattern that comes to life as I turn the block of wood into a bowl, goblet or pen. That is even more true with woods that are burled.
