  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Today I was in a Christian bookstore looking for a larger print Bible and I found this set of books that I had to have. My BIL's GF is really into the whole halloween, scary stories, ghosts and goblens stuff and I'm not. Rather than say "She's wrong." which would be bad because she's pretty much an acting parent, I got books about what I think halloween is. One is about how Christians can dress up & have parties for fun and the other is about how a pumpkin is like your heart before Christ and the Jack o lanturn is after which is why they have smiles...really cute & I think my nephew will get the answers he wants.

I *really* like the whole idea of as making a jack o lanturn we can talk about Jesus saving us...yep. :)

I've only been on these boards for a few months, but I can already tell that Halloween around here is the same as Harry Potter.

Which is to say, on both sides of the issue are Christians fanatically devoted to their position on it, and neither side will ever convince the other.

By the way, I like the Jack-o-lantern/heart metaphor. That was clever.

My nephew is surrounded by the scary aspects of the day and he's *really & truly* scared. He is alreayd worried about bad things coming to get him or people killing cats etc. The more I tell him that the stuff on TV is computer made and that God protects his children he's getting better. I mean now he replys to those "Are goblens going to come and get you?" with "There is no such thing and if there is God will protect me."

I think seeing Books to back me up will make it cement in his little head and that's what's important.

I always wonder how much of the christmas celebration is abhored by the 'no halloween' christians. considering much of the tradditions were adopted like the jack o lantern into smile of Jesus (and the light shining out is the light we shine on the world and all that)

I mean the day (December 25th) was chosen so that it would be near the 'winter solstice' in hopes of getting people to switch celebrations, (Jesus wasn't born in winter!) And lots of other traditions, like gifts being started about the Magi gifts, sorry they wern't... but I don't have a problem giving gifts on christmas (and talking about Jesus' birthday and the gifts of the Magi all that)

Anyway IMO take what you like talk about Jesus, any excuse to share with your kids is a good one IMO.

Both Amx and I have backgrounds in education, so we enjoy the children's holiday of Halloween. We like the opportunity to dress up, and the candy is a plus! Yeah, we'll trick-or-treat with The Cub. We'll probably even do the pumpkin.

The world is scary enough without having to add to the mess. We should take this opportunity to play and forget about the meanness out there. I was surpirsed that after Septemebr 11, 2001, the shift in popular costumes went to firefighters, policemen, and soldiers.

Say Linnis, what are those books? I might want to share them with The Cub.
