  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Oh, no!!

Is part of this problem a result of churches/ministries employing too many people or paying them too much?

I think most of their problem with being $3 Million in debt is the $3 million settlement against them.

I know that the recession/depression has hurt alot of people, like myself, but It hasn't stop my giving. I point to my local christian top hits radio station who had their annual telethon the week before Thanksgiving. The first time in 3 years they made their goal, and their goal ussually goes up $5,000 dollars everytime they have one. The recession/depression doesn't seem to have effected peoples giving around here. And my area has been hit hard by the recession/depression and it seems like people are actually giving more, or more people are giving.

Agreed but I was looking at the excuse this ministry said was the main problem, which they say is the recession. And they didn't specifically say they were exactly $3,000,000 in debt but that it contributed to the debt.

URGENT!
Please help me survive the greatest crisis I have ever faced!

This ministry began more than 30 years ago because of a vision and the generosity of 12 of my closest friends. Today, I am once again asking my closest friends for a gift to help me survive the greatest crisis I have ever faced and to ensure that the Gospel continues to be preached around the world.

Some precious friends have stepped forward and agreed to match the first $500,000 with gifts of their own. Any gift you give today can be DOUBLED for the Lord’s work up to $500,000. Your gift of $100 can be doubled to $200, or your gift of $1,000 can be doubled to $2,000!

My friend, thank you for your generosity toward this ministry. You have been such a blessing and I am so grateful for your support. I need you to stand with me today.

I found it under the Sudan ministry section.

Typical appeal for money, IMO.

If Parsley is facing a crisis in funds that requires him having to do ask people to bail him out then I would suggest he take it as possibly being the Lord telling him to scale back. Others have do it, why not him?

Our church has just gone through a serious tight-money crisis and for several months we had to dig into emergency funds to meet budget. I decided to trust God rather than dun our people to up their giving, or scold non-givers for not carrying their weight. We (the leaders) did not ask anyone--except the Lord--for help, we did not whine or beg, we simply waited. And the Lord has come through. Granted, we were not looking at $3-million but it was enough to concern me.

Point being, if God is really your source and really raised up your ministry, then trust Him. Period. If He didn’t, or if He doesn’t supply your need without your begging for help from people, then maybe “your” ministry needs to sink to the bottom of the ocean.

~Jim

The church also says its situation was made more serious by a $3 million settlement with parents who said their toddler son was left with marks from a spanking at a church day care center.

The statement says there are no plans to shut down church operations, such as schools.

Do you think it is really an “attack” … or something else?

I think Parsley and World Harvest Church (WHC) are being disingenuous.

I looked into the $3 million settlement over what they called "marks from a spanking".

That is an understatement to say the least. The boy was beat with a ruler. And punitive damages were awarded because it wasn't the first time the same person abused one of the children at the church. The first child he abused while in the employ of WHC had a fractured skull.

Aha. And from an attorney, no less. Thanx, T.

Imagine all the Catholics my age or older who could sue the RCC for the methods nuns used for punishment, they used rulers too.

Did they ever fracture your skull?
No, is that what this person at the day care did? I hope criminal charges were filed and the person is sitting in jail!

Um, that summation of the lawsuit is more than a little disingenuous also;

Church seeks to settle lawsuit | The Columbus Dispatch

Among other things, there is no evidence whatsoever that the child that suffered a fractured skull while at the daycare was a result of "abuse", and certainly not by being beat with a ruler. Additionally, the man was investigated by the police after parents took photos of the marks, but never charged with any crime. Minor detail I suppose...

In any event, $6 million, the original amount awarded to these parents for "emotional distress", is an absolutely ludicrous figure that is a yet another indication that our litigious society has gone mad in allowing people to abuse the legal system, even using their children, as a get rich quick scheme.

Well, in summary...

A guy named Vaughan worked at the daycare/school as a substitute. On October 13, 2005 he was the only one working in the 3-year-old class. When a mom went to pick up her son she found him "anxiously waiting for her at the classroom door with his left eye swollen shut, his nose draining, and his face red and puffy." She took him to the hospital and he had a fractured skull.

She told the school about the incident. Vaughan claimed the boy had butted heads with another boy. But that other boy's father said his son was never injured and he (father) was never informed that such an incident occurred.

School did no investigation into how the boy got injured.

January 17, 2006, Mr. Faieta picks up his son from Vaughan's care (this is the second of only two times when Vaughan was alone with the children) and discovers welts, bruises, red marks on his son's buttocks, back and thighs.

The Faieta's tried to speak with WHC and the school to find out what had happened to their son. WHC told the Faieta's (in writing) that if they tried to come onto WHC property again, they'd be arrested for trespassing. WHC then did several things to try to cover up, including claiming that Faietas' son had a rash and telling other parents that a rash was going around.

The jury thought WHC's behavior was "extreme and outrageous."

I agree.

As far as whether the financial crisis is a "demonic attack"... meh. I suppose the devil might have infiltrated WHC in the form of a child abuser. But... WHC personnel are the ones who decided to keep it hush-hush and cover their own butts instead of worrying about the welfare of the children in their care.

I think WHC and Parsley need to be more open and honest about the facts.

I didn't say that the child who suffered the fractured skull was beat with a ruler, Pete.

And, yes, there was evidence that the fractured skull was a result of abuse.

Whether or not he was charged with a crime is completely irrelevant.

In any event, $6 million, the original amount awarded to these parents for "emotional distress", is an absolutely ludicrous figure that is a yet another indication that our litigious society has gone mad in allowing people to abuse the legal system, even using their children, as a get rich quick scheme.

Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Totally irrelevant. The jury, not the plaintiffs, awarded $6M.

This is not an "abuse" of the legal system. It was a legitimate cause of action.

Everyone's anti-litigious until it's their kids who get abused, or until they are the ones who get t-boned at an intersection. Then they realize why people sue.

Thank you, Renee.

I live in Columbus, all local media in Central Ohio are covering this and many central Ohio citizens are voicing their displeasure with World Harvest Church and their Word of Faith teachings. You be amaze the comments people are making around here. I for once, are keeping silence except for this post, listening and nodding in agreement.

The headline above Parsley's Web appeal was marked with red capital letters: CRISIS. Then: "Will you help me take back what the devil stole?"

Parsley was offering donors three things in the coming year: God's favor, good health and stress-free homes.

Thanks Tamara. I originally thought that the $3,000,000 was over kill but now I think it is just about right. I still say this man who did this should get in trouble and have to pay something, either with his money or his time. I agree that because the church seemed to try and cover this up they need to pay but right now it seems they are the only ones who are suffering punishment for this because what happend to this guy who was the offender? Did he even lose his job with the day care?

What does word of faith teachings have to do with a guy doing criminal acts in the church day care? And what does the church having lost revenue because of less donations because of the recession have to do with word of faith teachings.

Reading this thread through, not once did I get the idea that this was an opportunity to bash WOF. Does a Catholic Priest who has molested young boys discredit everything that the RCC teaches? And I would think that the recession is causeing churches from most all denominations to suffer lost revenue?
