Gestational diabetes and toxemia (which is pregnancy induced hypertension) and protinurea, and amniotic fluid volume- are not going to be an issue at 8 weeks, nor 15... (Many of these can pretty much be avoided anyway with proper nutrition)I may step on toes, but its only my opinion... I still think doctors check for more than just viability. They check so many things like blood pressure, for gestational diabetes, amniotic band, toxemia, protein and other things in urine, weight, etc... things that can help you to make the right decisions in pregnancy to ensure good health. There are things that can be caught in time and helped if not corrected, or things you need to be aware of. I always think if you have medical accessibility, why not use it? You aren't sick, but they monitor you to ensure that illness does not occur or become harmful. You have to do whats comfortable for you, no matter what even dh or mom or friends (or me or anyone) think... its your baby!
God bless you truly in your decision.
Most midwives will ask you to weigh yourself, have you check your own urine, and then possibly listen with a doptone...though some will wait until 20 weeks to listen with a fetoscope. They will probably do an initial pelvic exam, and check your fundal height to confirm your dates...your fundal height can't even begin to be palpated until around 12 weeks. They'll take your medical history and ask if you have any concerns or questions. They'll talk to you about nutrition.
But I would very heartily second what gracefaith wrote about your peace of mind! If it will set you more at ease to see a healthcare professional--then that is the right thing for you. If you have peace of mind waiting, then that is the right thing for you. I had an early sonogram with this pregnancy- because I NEEDED to know that there was only one baby...I just needed that for my peace of mind...
