From what I've seen so far, I'll be shocked if Chauvin isn't convicted on the manslaughter charge. I'll also be shocked if he's convicted on the murder 2 charge. Murder 3, I dunno.

I tend to give the cop the benefit of the doubt. I can accept the idea that Chauvin thought (falsely) that if Floyd could speak, then he could breathe okay. But I still feel that Chauvin acted with callous disregard for Floyd's safety, keeping him pinned to the concrete for more than a reasonable amount of time.

Derek Chauvin Trial 4/5/21: Minneapolis police chief testifies Chauvin's actions violated policy

Had to post an article in accordance with forum rules. But I am shocked that there there isn't already a thread for this. If you are keeping up with the trial, feel free to discuss your thoughts and opinions.
What's this then? Police chief testifies that restraint of George Floyd 'absolutely' violated policy, ethics of Dept.

It's got 44 posts (at this writing) and has been active since Monday.

I just want to know when to stay home if the verdict comes out a certain way.
BLM tried to take over Detroit, but our professional police force kept them in check. Despite that, I will still stay home if it comes out 'not' guilty.

Well I could use a new torque wrench and maybe some tires so I'll probably go out and do some looting at some point.

As long as you shout "Black Lives Matter!" or "Say Her Name!" you should be fine. Then you are peacefully protesting and claiming your reparations...but not looting.

Any predictions on when the jury will reach a verdict?
I think they reached their verdict before the opening statements. Unless we have a real case of 12 angry men.

I'm Australian, so this is way outside our national ambit. It has received coverage on the local news though.

One thing that comes through to me loud and clear is the fragility and unpredictability of life. We don't know what's around the corner.

George Floyd merely intended to buy a packet of cigarettes using a $20 bill which he may or may not have known was fake. Shortly after he was dead, killed by excessive force used during an arrest, possibly compounded by ill health.

Derek Chauvin had a history of being heavy handed, but he would have gone to work that day merely expecting the usual run of the mill duties to unfold and then he would be back home again.

He was fired the next day, along with the other officers involved, and is now possibly facing a long stretch in prison, in an environment where they don't like ex-cops.

We don't know what our providence is going to do next.

Solitary confinement might be a good idea in Chauvin's case, for his own protection.

I am concerned about one of the rookie cops though, the one who tried to help Floyd. One day he's a rookie, trying to do a good job, the next he's fired and facing criminal charges, thanks to the actions of a senior officer. I doubt he'll ever get back on the police force, but at least I think he should be acquitted.
