  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

In Genesis, Abraham met the priest Melchizedek (spelling?) and worshiped the LORD and gave 10% of all he had just aquired (from a recent raid to save his nephew Lot).

In the book of Malachi, chapter three, God tells the people to test him by giving one tenth of all they have because the LORD will pour out the floodgates of heaven (blessings).

The book of Acts is full of stories of believers giving to the church. Some went as far as selling their property and bringing it to the apostles.

Sorry, I can't help anymore than that. This is all I can remember off the top of my head, but I assure you tithing is a biblical concept and 10% isn't any random number. :)

Yes...tithing is biblical. And it's not too much to ask...we still have the remaining 90%, which is a much greater part, to spend anyway we want.

By the way, many people have questions not just about tithing per se...but whether u calculate the 10% from the gross income or the net income (after all taxes are wihthheld). My mom have always emphasized to us as kids (coz we were taught to tithe even from our allowances) that if we earn our own money as adults, we are encouraged to give tithe from the gross income. Her basis on this was the scripture saying: Give to Caeasar what is Caeasar's and to God what is God's. It's in the NT and came out from Jesus' mouth.

If we give tithe based on the net income, it's like giving God the leftover or the spare of what we earned. If the government computes the tax based on our gross income and we do not hesitate to comply...why not give God His 10% which is nothing compared, really, from what the government takes from us.

My mom deeply encourages us (my family) to give tithes faithfully coz she reasoned, it is like robbing God of what is rightfully His.

She also emphasized the tithing isn't giving offering yet. It is just giving back to God what is rightfully His. Offering and giving is extra...where u offer up money in thanksgiving, or as a pledge, or for any other Christian prupose it may serve. Of course, it doesn't matter how much u give, but it has to come from ur heart. if you are full of thanks...express it in your offering

Now, I am not advocating everyone to listen to all this. I just shared my conviction and beliefs, as influenced by my mom. It is up to you, really. ^_^

I'll quote a past post of mine on this topic:

God's instructions on giving as Christians are as follows:
6Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. 7Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.
2 Cor 9:6-8
You'll notice that there's no specific amount given. In the Old Testament, the Israelites were expected to give 10% of their income to the temple, so that's considered a good amount to give if you're not sure how much. Feel free to give more, though.

Here is my family's story about tithing. When I was very young, my parents were pretty poor. At that point, they were tithing out of their net income (money after taxes, SS, etc.) And we were living hand-to-mouth. Then, they decided to tithe out of their gross income (money before taxes, SS, etc.) After doing this for a little over a year (and God did provide for us that year), my father's job arranged to send him all around the country, and they paid for me and my mother to go also. They paid for transportation, and also for housing every place that we went to for about 18 months. It was absolutely wonderful, because they didn't have to worry about rent for that entire time. By the time we got back to the DC area, they had saved up enough to buy a house and send me to a private Christian school. Now, we still weren't millionaires or anything, but God provided for our needs.

Some other good verses about giving:
Luke 6:38 38Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."

Malachi 3:8-10 "Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me.
"But you ask, 'How do we rob you?'
"In tithes and offerings. 9 You are under a curse-the whole nation of you-because you are robbing me. 10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD A lmighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.

The Bible says a lot more stuff about giving and about money in general. (Something like 400 references, IIRC, and that may just be the New Testament.) You could probably look it up in a concordance (if you have one) or find a devotional about it somewhere.
