Besides for that, there is St. Xenia... and I also am thinking of the discussion in The Mountain of Silence of praying and fasting and doing podvigs for dead elders or dead disciples and so on.

I completely believe it's there, but I don't remember reading about this but I would love to check it out to give me perspective. Do you have a page number? (such a wonderful book!)

Well I hadn't read it since the beginning of last summer but I looked it up... and in my (paperback) copy it talks about it on the bottom of page 155 to page 157... it gives two examples but only one involves actions instead of just prayer: "a struggle of prayer, fasting, and charity in order to free his elder from hell."

It is a wonderful book indeed... one of my favorites.
